Job description

The University of Iowa, Department of Pharmaceutical Care, is seeking a full-time Clinical Pharmacy Specialist to join our team. This pharmacist position provides pharmaceutical care to patients receiving investigational drug services (IDS) and support to principle investigators and study coordinators. It also serves as a role-model/practitioner-educator for Doctor of Pharmacy Students. 

Position Responsibilities:

With other IDS staff, facilitate implementation of investigational studies including but not limited to:

  • Meet with principle investigators and study coordinators
  • Meet with study sponsors
  • Create inventory logs and dispensing protocols for IDS and non-IDS dispensed studies
  • Manage electronic study protocols and inventory in Vestigo
  • Review dispensing locations outside of pharmacy for investigator-dispensed studies
  • Ensure appropriate EMR record creation
  • Serve as an IDS pharmacy member on protocol review committees such as TREC, P&T, and Investigational Drug Services

Complete all maintenance activities for studies.

Dispense investigational medications for inpatient and outpatient studies.

Supervisory activities:

  • Supervise pharmacy technicians, students and support staff daily
  • Provide feedback for performance evaluations

Residency Training and Student Teaching Programs:

  • Precept pharmacy student and resident rotations
  • Prepare and administer rotation evaluations

Other duties:

  • Provide education to pharmacy staff regarding study protocols as needed
  • Be a resource to staff for issues in clinical trials
  • Develop or contribute to the development of protocols related to appropriate prescribing, dispensing and monitoring of investigational medications
  • Develop and coordinate completion of investigational drug oriented departmental goals
  • Contribute to the department budgetary process by reviewing, designing, implementing, and monitoring budget initiatives that address investigational drug services
  • Perform quality assurance monitoring of services provided by the Investigational Drug Service
  • Develop educational programs to certify the clinical competence of pharmacists and improve the technician understanding of investigational drug therapy
  • Develop and maintain policies and standard operating procedures
  • Provide oversight and support to satellite locations

Education Requirements:

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree is required
  • License by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners is required upon hire.

Experience Requirements:

  • Satisfactory completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency or two years' experience in a complex multi-disciplinary healthcare environment is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Job-related experience with and/ or commitment to service excellence is required.
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Desired Qualifications

  • Satisfactory completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY2 residency in Ambulatory Care, Oncology or Pediatrics is highly desirable.
  • Active board certification in Oncology, Ambulatory Care, Pharmacotherapy or Pediatrics is highly desirable.
  • Experience in inpatient or outpatient oncology pharmacy is highly desirable
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others.
  • Time management and organizational skills, must demonstrate the ability to prioritize and accurately complete tasks.
