What Is a LAMP Stack Developer?

LAMP, an open-source web development platform, stands for Linux, Apaches, MySQL, and PHP. A LAMP stack developer utilizes this software bundle to create powerful web application platforms. They also set up hardware and basic infrastructure, basic shell scripting, manage firewalls and permissions, and complete back-end tasks, such as creating and maintaining a database. Qualifications include skills in technology and experience in stack development, website development, and programming languages.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a LAMP Stack Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a LAMP Stack Developer, you need a solid understanding of Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP, along with experience in web development and database management. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, frameworks such as Laravel, and relevant certifications in web technologies are often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help developers collaborate and address complex technical challenges. These skills ensure the robust development, deployment, and maintenance of scalable and secure web applications.

What are some common challenges Lamp Stack Developers face when integrating new technologies with legacy systems?

Lamp Stack Developers often encounter challenges when integrating modern frameworks or APIs with existing legacy systems built on Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP. Ensuring compatibility, data migration, and maintaining security standards can be complex, especially if the legacy codebase is outdated or poorly documented. To address these challenges, developers frequently collaborate with system administrators, database engineers, and front-end developers, using version control and thorough testing to minimize disruptions. Being proactive in learning new tools and maintaining clear communication within the team can help ease the integration process.

What are Lamp Stack Developers?

LAMP Stack Developers are software professionals who specialize in building and maintaining web applications using the LAMP stack, which stands for Linux (operating system), Apache (web server), MySQL (database), and PHP (programming language). They are responsible for both backend and, sometimes, frontend development, ensuring that web applications are robust, scalable, and secure. LAMP Stack Developers often handle everything from server configuration to database management and application logic, making them versatile contributors to web development teams.

What is the difference between Lamp Stack Developer vs MEAN Stack Developer?

AspectLamp Stack DeveloperMEAN Stack Developer
Core TechnologiesLinux, Apache, MySQL, PHPMongoDB, Express.js, Angular, Node.js
Work EnvironmentServer-side web development, backend focusFull-stack development, JavaScript-based
Common UsageTraditional LAMP-based web applicationsModern JavaScript applications and single-page apps

While both roles involve web development, a Lamp Stack Developer primarily works with PHP and Linux-based servers, focusing on backend development. In contrast, a MEAN Stack Developer specializes in JavaScript technologies for full-stack development, often building dynamic, single-page applications. The choice depends on the project requirements and preferred technology stack.

The ideal candidate is equally comfortable writing production code, diagnosing complex site reliability issues, managing cloud infrastructure, and leading technical problem-solving during high-severity incidents.
This role requires strong operational judgment and the ability to independently own production challenges across application, database, infrastructure, and deployment layers. The engineer will collaborate closely with our China-based development organization, serving as a senior US-based technical lead responsible for cross-team coordination, code quality, architectural guidance, and production stability.
This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced engineer who thrives in high-scale ecommerce environments and enjoys combining deep application engineering with modern cloud operations and production ownership.
PLEASE NOTE: Candidates much be local to or willing to relocate to the Calabasas area as we operate on a hybrid work model (3 days onsite, 2 remote)
What You'll Do
Key Responsibilities

  • Full-Stack Platform Engineering: Design, develop, and maintain scalable features and services across our LAMP-based ecommerce platform, with a strong focus on reliability, performance, maintainability, and operational excellence.
  • Production Operations & Incident Response: Act as a senior technical escalation point for complex production incidents, troubleshooting issues across application, infrastructure, networking, database, CDN, and deployment layers. Lead root cause analysis and drive long-term stability improvements.
  • AWS Infrastructure Ownership: Manage and optimize AWS infrastructure, including deployment architecture, scaling strategies, observability, security, disaster recovery, and cost efficiency. Partner closely with DevOps and engineering leadership on operational best practices.
  • High-Scale Performance Optimization: Monitor and improve application, database, and infrastructure performance for high-traffic consumer web applications. Identify bottlenecks and implement scalable solutions to improve uptime, latency, and system resilience.
  • Cross-Functional Technical Leadership: Partner with Product, Design, Operations, and Customer Experience teams to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions and ensure successful project execution.
  • Global Engineering Collaboration: Work closely with the China-based engineering team to coordinate development efforts, conduct code reviews, align on architectural direction, manage releases, and maintain strong engineering communication across time zones.
  • Code Quality & Engineering Standards: Champion high engineering standards through code reviews, testing strategies, documentation, observability, and operational best practices. Drive continuous improvement in system reliability and development processes.
  • Technical Mentorship & Leadership: Provide technical mentorship and architectural guidance across the engineering organization. Influence technical direction through hands-on leadership, strong execution, and collaborative problem-solving.
