What is LabVIEW development?

LabVIEW development refers to the process of designing, creating, and maintaining applications using LabVIEW, which is a graphical programming environment developed by National Instruments. LabVIEW is widely used for data acquisition, instrument control, and industrial automation. Developers use LabVIEW's visual interface to create programs, or 'virtual instruments,' by connecting functional blocks instead of writing traditional code. This approach is especially popular in engineering, scientific research, and manufacturing settings where rapid prototyping and hardware integration are essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a LabVIEW developer?

To thrive as a LabVIEW Developer, you need strong expertise in graphical programming, experience with test automation, and a background in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with National Instruments LabVIEW software, DAQ hardware, and certifications like Certified LabVIEW Developer (CLD) are typically required. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating on complex projects and troubleshooting issues. These skills ensure efficient system development, reliable test automation, and smooth team collaboration in high-tech environments.

What are some common challenges faced by LabVIEW developers and how can they be addressed?

LabVIEW Developers often face challenges such as integrating LabVIEW with legacy hardware, managing large and complex codebases, and ensuring efficient collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. To address these, developers should maintain clear documentation, utilize LabVIEW's modular programming features, and follow best practices for version control. Regular code reviews and open communication with hardware engineers and project managers also help streamline development and troubleshoot issues quickly.

What is the difference between Labview Development vs Test Automation Engineer?

AspectLabview DevelopmentTest Automation Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering or computer science, with LabVIEW certification often preferred.Requires a degree in engineering, computer science, or related field; certifications in testing tools are common.
Work EnvironmentPrimarily lab and development settings, working on hardware integration and data acquisition.Mostly office and lab environments, focusing on designing and executing automated tests.
Industry UsageUsed in manufacturing, aerospace, and research for data acquisition and control systems.Common in electronics, automotive, and software industries for quality assurance and testing.

While both roles involve testing and data analysis, Labview Development focuses on creating software for hardware control and data acquisition, whereas Test Automation Engineers design and implement automated testing processes to ensure product quality.

Job description

About us

One team. Global challenges. Infinite opportunities. At Viasat, we’re on a mission to deliver connections with the capacity to change the world. For more than 35 years, Viasat has helped shape how consumers, businesses, governments and militaries around the globe communicate. We’re looking for people who think big, act fearlessly, and create an inclusive environment that drives positive impact to join our team.

What you'll do

You’ll work on complex hardware systems where test solutions don’t exist yet—and help build them from the ground up. You will play a hands-on role in integrating new devices under test (DUTs), developing and refining measurement techniques, and enabling reliable, scalable test solutions.

You will be a key contributor in figuring out how to test new products, solving technical challenges as they arise, and working closely with engineers to transition designs from development into production. If you enjoy working with hardware, troubleshooting complex systems, and building things that don’t already exist, this role will be a strong fit.

Perform development testing on new components, units, and test systems, including setup, configuration, execution, and reporting of both manual and automated tests

Support bring-up of new devices under test (DUTs) on Specialized Test Equipment (STE), resolving integration challenges across hardware and software

Contribute to the development and optimization of new measurement techniques and test methods to improve coverage, reliability, and efficiency.

Partner with engineering to translate requirements into scalable, repeatable test solutions.

Troubleshoot test failures and unexpected behavior, driving root cause identification across DUTs, instrumentation, and test systems

This is a sitebased role, employees work 3+ days (60%+) per week from a Viasat office or work location within a standard fiveday workweek.

The day-to-day
  • Bring up new DUTs on test systems, working through hardware, cabling, and configuration challenges
  • Debug failing tests, investigating both product behavior and test system issues
  • Build, modify, and maintain test equipment, fixtures, and STE systems
  • Improve test procedures based on hands-on experience, identifying gaps or inefficiencies
  • Maintain a well-organized, high functioning lab environment, ensuring equipment readiness and configuration control
  • Create and maintain documentation, including test procedures (ATP), wiring diagrams, BoMs, and assembly drawings
  • Partner closely with Test, Design, and Manufacturing Engineers on ongoing development and issue resolution

What you'll need
  • 5+ years' experience working in electronics, test engineering support, or a related technical field
  • Hands-on experience testing and troubleshooting electronic systems
  • Comfort with early-stage test system development and the ability to assist in their design and implementation
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work through loosely defined or evolving technical challenges
  • Familiarity with common test equipment, measurement techniques, and troubleshooting methods
  • Working knowledge of MS Office for documentation and reporting
  • Associate’s degree in a technical field or equivalent experience.

What will help you on the job
  • Experience supporting development or new product introduction (NPI) environments
  • Familiarity with RF test equipment (spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, signal generators)
  • Experience with environmental testing (TVAC, thermal cycling, vibration)
  • Exposure to test automation or scripting (Python, LabVIEW, or similar)
  • Experience building or modifying test racks, fixtures, or STE systems
  • A hands-on, curious mindset with a desire to understand how systems work and solve complex problems

Salary range
$32.21 - $50.96 / hourly. For specific work locations within San Jose, the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range for this role is $40.14 - $60.34/ hourly
