What is LabVIEW development?

LabVIEW development refers to the process of designing, creating, and maintaining applications using LabVIEW, which is a graphical programming environment developed by National Instruments. LabVIEW is widely used for data acquisition, instrument control, and industrial automation. Developers use LabVIEW's visual interface to create programs, or 'virtual instruments,' by connecting functional blocks instead of writing traditional code. This approach is especially popular in engineering, scientific research, and manufacturing settings where rapid prototyping and hardware integration are essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a LabVIEW developer?

To thrive as a LabVIEW Developer, you need strong expertise in graphical programming, experience with test automation, and a background in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with National Instruments LabVIEW software, DAQ hardware, and certifications like Certified LabVIEW Developer (CLD) are typically required. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating on complex projects and troubleshooting issues. These skills ensure efficient system development, reliable test automation, and smooth team collaboration in high-tech environments.

What are some common challenges faced by LabVIEW developers and how can they be addressed?

LabVIEW Developers often face challenges such as integrating LabVIEW with legacy hardware, managing large and complex codebases, and ensuring efficient collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. To address these, developers should maintain clear documentation, utilize LabVIEW's modular programming features, and follow best practices for version control. Regular code reviews and open communication with hardware engineers and project managers also help streamline development and troubleshoot issues quickly.

What is the difference between Labview Development vs Test Automation Engineer?

AspectLabview DevelopmentTest Automation Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering or computer science, with LabVIEW certification often preferred.Requires a degree in engineering, computer science, or related field; certifications in testing tools are common.
Work EnvironmentPrimarily lab and development settings, working on hardware integration and data acquisition.Mostly office and lab environments, focusing on designing and executing automated tests.
Industry UsageUsed in manufacturing, aerospace, and research for data acquisition and control systems.Common in electronics, automotive, and software industries for quality assurance and testing.

While both roles involve testing and data analysis, Labview Development focuses on creating software for hardware control and data acquisition, whereas Test Automation Engineers design and implement automated testing processes to ensure product quality.

Description

Job Description

Leidos is seeking an Automated Test Engineer to support a government contract in the National Capital Region (NCR). The ideal candidate has hands-on experience performing test and inspection (T&I) on electronic hardware using commercial test equipment, and can apply scripting (Python and/or LabVIEW) to automate hardware and software testing within hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) test environments, including building user-facing GUIs for test operators. The role also involves engaging directly with customers to educate them on T&I capabilities and support business development. This is a hands-on hardware-first role — strong equipment experience matters more than a pure software background.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Perform test, inspection, and functional verification of electronic equipment using NIST-traceable test equipment
  • Develop and/or modify scripts (Python and/or LabVIEW) to automate hardware and software testing within HWIL test environments
  • Design and build front-end GUIs for test operators to run, monitor, and interpret automated test procedures
  • Execute test procedures on equipment to validate functionality, accuracy, and compliance with applicable test and inspection requirements
  • Maintain hardware and associated automated test systems
  • Recommend and implement improvements to existing test processes, systems, and protocols
  • Support a software configuration management system for automated test software
  • Maintain system architecture to ensure versatility and consistency across multiple platforms
  • Train and assist other technicians in the use of automated platforms, encompassing both automated and manual execution of test procedures
  • Engage with customers to educate them on T&I capabilities, provide equipment training as needed, and support business development efforts
  • Provide input to test and system documentation, improvements to capabilities, build roadmaps, and update software as required
  • Update or develop documentation as necessary to support automated testing, including but not limited to:

Test and inspection requirements documents

Multimedia documentation for use with automated test systems

System documentation pertaining to hardware and software for automated test systems

Updates to test program style guides, GUI development, and architecture for existing and next-generation test and measurement systems

  • Attend meetings and reviews
  • Communicate with internal team members across multiple areas, the program manager, and customer team members
  • Communicate with external parties such as mission partners and vendors
Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with commercial test equipment from Agilent, Keysight, HP, Tektronix, and National Instruments, to include power supplies, multimeters, oscilloscopes, counters, power meters, signal & waveform generators, electronic loads, and audio, noise, signal, modulation and power analyzers
  • Active TS/SCI; must be eligible and willing to upgrade to TS/SCI w/polygraph
  • Must have a Bachelor of Science degree, preferably in an engineering field, and at least 8 years of relevant experience or Masters with 6 – 10 years of prior relevant experience; at least 12 years of work experience can be used in lieu of degree/combined with education
  • Working knowledge of Python or LabVIEW sufficient to automate hardware and software test procedures
  • Understanding of measurement traceability and use of NIST-traceable test equipment
  • Demonstrated experience/training in the operation of electronic devices such as transmitters, receivers, and power supplies
  • Strong written/verbal communication, problem-solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills, including willingness and ability to document and share information, educate customers, and provide equipment training
  • Able to work well in a team environment and as an individual contributor
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) test environments
  • Experience with software testing (unit, integration, or regression testing) in addition to hardware testing
  • Experience developing user-facing GUIs or test dashboards for non-technical operators
  • Knowledge of RF principles and hands-on RF test experience
  • Knowledge of cellular technologies and/or cellular testing experience
  • Background in electronics maintenance or a test and inspection (T&I) environment
  • Knowledgeable of electronics and electrical engineering principles (voltage, current, RF)
  • Experience with customer-facing roles, technical training delivery, or business development support
