At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering (ACE), supporting Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. The team fosters innovation and drives engineering workflows of the future, shared solutions and standards, simplicity and lower costs, and manufacturable design.

Responsibilities:

As an integral part of our highly trained team of Radiation Effects Test Engineers, you will lead the charge for EEE parts-level, circuit-level, and system-level radiation effects testing that will directly impact all of Blue's space missions. Your primary focuses will be efficiently planning/executing tests for the effects of total ionizing dose (TID), displacement damage dose (DDD), and single events (SEE). Experience with radiation test automation, data collection, and data processing is desirable. Experience leading others through radiation effects test and qualification is also desirable.

Duties to include:

  • Develop radiation test plans and reports (TID, DDD, SEE).
  • Perform and lead radiation tests at external facilities (up to 25% travel).
  • Develop custom radiation test setups with emphasis on automated data collection and processing.
  • Evaluate electronic components against mission radiation hardness requirements; advise parts selection based on results.
  • Evaluate internal and external radiation test data for compliance with hardness requirements and industry standards.
  • Lead program personnel through test procedures to meet cost and schedule constraints.
  • Serve as a technical reference and mentor to Blue teammates regarding industry test standards and best practices for parts of all technology types (CMOS, bipolar, BiCMOS, GaN, GaAs, etc.).
  • Maintain radiation team's capabilities in line with state-of-the-industry standards.
  • Identify and drive needed improvements in Blue's in-house radiation test capabilities and laboratory.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Nuclear Science, or related field with 7+ years of proven direct experience in radiation effects testing (TID, DDD, and SEE).
  • Hands-on experience developing component test and measurement hardware for radiation effects test.
  • Strong understanding of the effects of radiation on electronics.
  • Strong grasp of basic and complex digital and analog circuitry (transistors, logic, memories, microcontrollers, FPGAs, etc.).
  • Extensive experience with associated laboratory test equipment (power supplies, signal generators, SMUs, oscilloscopes, etc.).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Domestic travel required. Foreign travel possible.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with Python and/or NI LabView programming and embedded software.
  • Experience with Altium, OrCAD, or similar ECAD PCB design software and ability to design custom PCBs for radiation test.
  • Proficiency with the following programming languages, platforms, and protocols: C, SVN, Gitlab, SQL, I2C, SPI, VHDL/Verilog.
