The City of Jersey City is seeking a laborer for the Division of Sanitation in the Department of Public Works. This position will be responsible for performing varied types of manual and unskilled laboring work and may require driving a truck in connection with laboring work on occasion.
Examples of Duties
Job Duties:
โข Loads lifts, and moves supplies, furniture, and equipment.
โข Digs trenches and does manual grading.
โข Cleans incinerators.
โข Collects rubbish and other refuse.
โข Cuts grass and trim hedges.
โข Waters lawns, flowers, and vegetable beds.
โข Loads and unloads trucks.
โข Shovels snow, gravel, and sand.
โข Whitewashes walls.
โข Places forms used in concrete work.
โข Performs cold patching.
โข Cleans up underbrush, foliage, vines, and weeds.
โข Cuts down trees.
โข Digs out stumps of trees, and digs out and destroys poisonous vines, weeds, and undergrowth.
โข Learns to operate construction and/or maintenance equipment.
โข May learn to operate a pneumatic drill.
โข May learn to operate and make minor repairs to the street, road, and related public works equipment.
โข May rake asphalt mixtures used in paving to proper thickness and grade.
โข May distribute asphalt mixtures to eliminate hollows and high spots on the surface under the construction or repair.
โข May patch joints and edges of pavement with asphalt cement.
โข May tamp and smooth asphalt pavement.
โข Cleans sludge beds.
โข Sweeps streets and sidewalks, and cleans sewers.
โข Pries and hammers apart sections of wall and roof.
โข Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Required Education:
High School Diploma or GED required.
Required Experience:
One (1) year of experience in performing labor manual and unskilled labor work is preferred.
Required License:
Appointees must possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
