About the Faculty and Department The Faculty of Science & Technology offers a range of undergraduate programs that prepare students for careers across the sciences and technology fields. The Department of Chemistry & Physics is an important part of the Faculty, offering a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, playing an important role in a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Science, and offering minors in Chemistry and Physics. The Department's laboratory environments are central to its work and depend on close collaboration among faculty members, laboratory instructors, and technologists.
About the role Reporting to the Chair of Chemistry & Physics and working as part of a team, the Laboratory Technologist plans and organizes laboratory procedures, equipment, materials, and supplies required for assigned junior- and senior-level chemistry courses. The role provides materials, technical guidance, training, and equipment support to students and faculty. The Laboratory Technologist also contributes to the procurement of laboratory materials and consumables, the safe and effective operation of assigned laboratories, and chemical and waste management practices.
Through this work, the Chemistry Laboratory Technologist helps ensure that chemistry laboratories are safe, well organized, and ready to support high-quality teaching and learning. This is a full-time, on-campus replacement term position working 35 hours per week. The anticipated term is from August 24, 2026 to March 31, 2027.
Responsibilities: Responsibility 1: Preparation of Chemistry Resources for Laboratories (50%) The LT is responsible for all assigned laboratories in preparing for each week's labs. This work includes: Setting up and preparing chemical solutions, equipment, models and consumables for assigned laboratories. Transporting supplies to the laboratories as needed.
Ensuring all chemicals are correctly prepared and labeled with appropriate safety information. Inspecting all equipment to make sure it is working properly before the lab begins. Anticipating any conflicts that might arise with other courses with respect to equipment, glassware and supplies.
Understanding how various procedures work for each lab and ensuring that each of these procedures work correctly. Washing and cleaning used glassware and equipment as needed. Through this work, the LT enables program success by providing relevant services, support, and resources.
Responsibility 2: Provision of Technical Assistance (10%) The LT is responsible for teaching faculty how to use the equipment and instruments if they are not already familiar with them. The LT may also offer new ideas and suggestions for changes to laboratory tests and procedures when necessary. This work includes: Providing technical expertise and information to faculty on procedures and use of equipment and computer programs used in the labs.
Creating, designing, and building laboratory equipment needed for laboratories. Refining laboratory procedures for more efficient use of time and resources with a special emphasis on laboratory safety and good laboratory practice. Foreseeing potential problems or hazards and recommending a safe and effective alternative action.
Assisting any student that needs help in the operation of laboratory equipment. Serving as a resource of information for the university community regarding chemical problems as they arise. Attending regular lab group meetings for assigned courses.
Through this work the LT provides essential expertise, support, and training to employees and students, and ensures that laboratory programming is subject to continuous improvement. Responsibility 3: Maintaining Chemical, Equipment and Supplies Inventory (20%) Working collaboratively with other team members, the LT helps with chemical inventory, ordering of resources for labs, and maintaining equipment and supplies. The LT also helps maintain the inventory of supplies and consumables to determine what needs to be ordered for each semester.
This work includes: Inputting chemical inventory items into the computer and keeping SDS up to date. Purchasing the chemicals, glassware, and consumables needed for laboratory courses. Submitting expense reports as needed .
Keeping equipment clean and ready for use in the labs. Supporting and communicating with faculty regarding revised experiments or required materials for new experiments. Through this work, the LT enables student success by supporting the maintenance and control of supplies, inventory, equipment, and records, and plays a key role in procurement and inventory management, supporting the effective use and organization of the Department's resources.
Responsibility 4: Servicing Laboratories (10%) The LT is responsible for maintaining supplies, equipment, and instruments. This work includes: Ensuring all materials in labs are returned to their correct drawers, shelves and cupboards. Inspecting all equipment to make sure each item is in working order after labs have finished.
Maintaining supplies in the lab to ensure a sufficient stock throughout the semester. Checking the communal equipment in assigned labs from time to time and replacing whatever is required. Ensuring assigned rooms are clean and tidy before the start of next semester Through this work, the LT ensures the effective maintenance of the laboratory environment.
Responsibility 5: Biohazards, Chemical Wastes and Safety (5%) The LT is responsible for all biohazardous and chemical wastes coming out of the labs. These materials must be handled correctly and dealt with properly in order that no harm comes to students, faculty, or staff that may be in the labs. This work includes: Ensuring biohazardous and chemical waste containers are available for labs and clearly labeled.
Knowing how to deal with chemical and biohazardous spills in the laboratory. Employing proper response procedures in case of emergency situations, in particular accidental contamination due to chemical or biohazardous spills. Ensuring the presence of appropriate safety signage and equipment (fire extinguishers, fume hoods, etc.) at all times in the lab, and reporting any deficiencies as needed
Placing properly labeled containers for broken glass, paper towels, gloves and contaminants. Taking all biohazardous and chemical wastes to the appropriate area(s) for proper disposal in the correct container. Ensuring all instructors are aware of safety concerns regarding the handling of biohazardous and chemical waste.
Attending the training provided by EH&S periodically to stay current with lab safety. Through this work, the LT contributes to a healthy and safe working environment. Responsibility 6: Maintenance of the Chemical Storage Area (5%) The LT is responsible for the maintenance of the Chemical Stores.
This work includes: Safe storage of the chemicals as per their class and designation. Routine maintenance of the chemical stores. Updating the chemical inventory and restocking the shelves with essentials.
Maintenance of the chemical preparatory area. Through this work the LT contributes to the effective operation of shared working environments and facilities. Qualifications Candidates will have strong technical laboratory skills congruent with supporting a range of university-level laboratory courses, excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students.
The ideal candidates will have an earned Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry or a closely-related field, and a minimum of 5-8 years' experience working in a laboratory setting. Experience with laboratory safety, GHS/WHMIS, and waste management is also desirable.
