Laboratory Technical Director information

What does a laboratory technical director do?

A Laboratory Technical Director is responsible for overseeing the technical operations of a laboratory, ensuring that all testing processes comply with regulatory and quality standards. They supervise laboratory personnel, establish and maintain protocols, and ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results. Additionally, they play a key role in managing laboratory safety, training staff, and implementing new technologies or procedures. Their leadership ensures that the laboratory maintains high standards of quality and efficiency.

What is the difference between Laboratory Technical Director vs Laboratory Supervisor?

AspectLaboratory Technical DirectorLaboratory Supervisor
CredentialsTypically requires a relevant degree (e.g., Bachelor's or higher in science or technology) and industry certificationsUsually requires a relevant degree and some laboratory experience, but fewer certifications
Work EnvironmentOversees multiple labs or departments, strategic planning, and complianceManages daily lab operations and staff directly
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in research, clinical, and industrial labs for leadership rolesCommonly used in clinical, hospital, or industrial labs for operational management

The Laboratory Technical Director focuses on strategic oversight, compliance, and high-level management, while the Laboratory Supervisor handles daily operations and staff supervision. Both roles require relevant credentials, but the director's role is broader and more strategic.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a laboratory technical director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Laboratory Technical Director, you need advanced expertise in laboratory science, regulatory compliance, and quality assurance, typically supported by a doctoral degree (PhD or MD) and board certification (such as ABCC or ABMLI). Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS), accreditation standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP), and proficiency in specialized testing technologies are essential. Leadership, critical thinking, and strong communication skills help manage teams, resolve issues, and ensure accurate reporting. These capabilities are crucial to maintain regulatory compliance, ensure high-quality results, and lead laboratory operations effectively.

What are some common challenges faced by a laboratory technical director and how can they be addressed?

Laboratory Technical Directors often encounter challenges such as maintaining regulatory compliance, managing a diverse team, and ensuring high-quality testing standards. Keeping up with evolving accreditation requirements and technological advancements can be demanding, so staying informed through continuous education and training is essential. Additionally, fostering open communication with laboratory staff and other departments helps address workflow issues and improve overall efficiency. Proactively implementing quality assurance programs and regularly reviewing protocols can also mitigate potential problems before they arise.

Job description

Cryopak Industries Inc. is seeking a hands-on Packaging Engineering Director to lead the design, development, validation, and continuous improvement of temperature-controlled packaging solutions for pharmaceutical, life sciences, biotechnology, healthcare, food, and specialty product customers.

This is a leadership role for an engineering professional with strong technical depth in cold chain packaging, thermal validation, product development, and manufacturing support. The ideal candidate is comfortable leading a team while remaining close to technical execution, customer requirements, laboratory testing, and commercialization activities.

What You Will Do
  • Lead and mentor the Packaging Engineering team.
  • Oversee the development of temperature-controlled packaging systems, including insulated shippers, gel packs, phase change materials, vacuum-insulated panels, refrigerants, and cold chain monitoring solutions.
  • Support the development and optimization of cold chain product families, including passive thermal shippers, reusable cooler systems, insulated pallet covers, and sustainable temperature-controlled packaging.
  • Oversee thermal modeling, validation activities, laboratory testing, and customer-specific qualification projects.
  • Develop customer-specific solutions in collaboration with Sales, Customer Service, Operations, and Quality teams.
  • Drive innovation, continuous improvement, cost reduction, and commercialization of new packaging technologies.
What We Are Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Packaging Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • 7-10+ years of engineering experience in manufacturing, packaging, cold chain, pharmaceutical, medical device, or a related industry.
  • 3-5+ years of leadership experience managing engineering professionals.
  • Strong knowledge of temperature-controlled packaging, thermal validation, product development, and laboratory testing.
  • Experience with cold chain products such as insulated containers, VIP panels, gel packs, PCM refrigerants, dry ice-compatible systems, and temperature monitoring devices.
  • Experience with CAD software, SolidWorks preferred.
  • Bilingual French and English, written and spoken. (will lead and collaborate with teams across Canada and the United States, participate in daily meetings conducted in English, and communicate regularly with clients, suppliers, and business partners located around the world.)
Why Join Cryopak

This is an opportunity to join a specialized cold chain packaging organization and play a key role in developing solutions that support critical temperature-sensitive shipments across regulated industries. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, customers, and technical experts to bring innovative packaging solutions from concept to commercialization.
