This position is designed to support the varied needs of the Colorado State University Diagnostic Laboratories. The successful candidate will have the flexibility to work in multiple sections and the willingness to accept widely varied tasks and assignments. Laboratory technical work is not guaranteed and is based on both business need and qualifications/experience level of selected applicant. Candidate must be available for flexible work hours with some work outside normal operating hours. More than 40 hours of work may be required some weeks, depending on case load (overtime will be paid). The position is full-time with determination of schedule based on current section needs and input from the employee. Weekend work may be required, based on case load and scheduling needs.
Essential Job Duties:Perform Office-related functions: The incumbent may be required to perform duties including but not limited to: organize submission paperwork for the sample receiving section, business office, and/or laboratory sections; perform data entry of accession information into the LIMS system verifying correct veterinarian/owner information and test chosen (knowledge of tests, times/dates run, and pricing information is essential); add documents to quality management application; scan documents into appropriate accession and update data/charges; invoicing cases after lab personnel complete testing which requires verification of correct test choices and prices, application of any panel/screen variables, and assurance of correct billing party.
Perform Sample Receiving & Laboratory functions: The incumbent may be required to perform duties including but not limited to: open packages received through the mail, couriers (Fedex, UPS, local), campus mail service, or those dropped off by students or area clinics; review submission form(s) to ensure all information is accurate; assign accession number(s) and route specimens with necessary form(s) to the appropriate area/section/laboratory; scan submission documents into LIMS system before routing; separate samples by centrifugation; distribute blood, body fluids, urine and other samples to appropriate laboratory sections; participate in duty rotation; drive company vehicle to CSU Central Receiving, Federal Express, UPS, and/or other locations to retrieve packages and laboratory specimens; perform courier route, as needed; unload palleted supplies and deliver to appropriate laboratory section.
Perform Laboratory Support Tasks: Laboratory technical work is not guaranteed but may include: laboratory sample organization, preparation, and/or testing (position may include some testing based on applicant qualifications/experience level and needs of various sections; create sample collection media tubes; assemble sample collection kits; perform various support duties for other members of the diagnostic laboratory staff, faculty and/or sections such as stocking supplies, daily and bi-annual cleaning of entire area, temperature logging of refrigerators & freezers, entering test results into LIMS system, and other duties as assigned.
Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for new hires)
Valid Driver's License - Must possess or obtain a valid driver's license by the employment start date and maintain such in good standing for duration of active employment.
Essential Services Designation - Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare.
Shift Work - CSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory does not follow standard University Holiday Schedule due to the nature of the business. Monday through Friday is typical schedule but rotation of holidays is required and occasional Saturdays needed.
On-call Status - In the event of an emergency is declared by the Veterinary Diagnostic Lab Director, needed to meet NAHLN requirements, overtime work or work outside normal operating ours will be required.
Use, Handling, or Exposure to hazardous materials - Exposure to formalin & formalin-fixed tissues. This position handles samples that may contain infectious agents and must follow PPE guidelines and appropriate standard operating procedures.
Special Requirements/Other - Must safely lift and carry items that weigh up to 50lbs. May be required to be rabies vaccinated upon hire and maintain protective titers (blood drawn on a schedule determined by CSU Occupational Health to evaluate status).
No formal supervisory authority.
Bachelor's degree completed or in progress in microbiology, biology, environmental science or related field is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a laboratory setting is preferred.
