Job Title: Laboratory Technician – Gas Analysis

Job Description

This Laboratory Technician role focuses on performing routine and non‑routine analysis of medical and specialty gases to detect impurities and verify product quality. You will work in one of several analytical laboratories, operating advanced analytical instrumentation, handling gas cylinders, and using laboratory software while following strict quality, safety, and regulatory requirements. The position offers hands‑on experience in gas analysis, opportunities for professional growth in a rapidly expanding industry.

Responsibilities

  • Perform analytical testing of gas samples for impurities using gas chromatography and spectroscopic techniques to ensure product quality.
  • Connect gas cylinders to analytical systems within ventilated cabinets, initiate analysis runs, and safely disconnect cylinders upon completion, with each hook‑up and removal potentially taking up to 30 minutes per sample.
  • Operate and maintain gas chromatography systems, including GC/GCP‑type instruments, using Galaxy/Compass GC control software.
  • Use Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometers to identify and quantify gas components and trace impurities.
  • Conduct analysis using CO₂ analyzers to measure carbon dioxide concentration and purity as required.
  • Upload, review, and document analytical results in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to maintain accurate electronic records.
  • Perform routine calibration, verification, and basic maintenance of analytical instruments to ensure accuracy, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Analyze finished gas products to confirm purity and conformance to internal specifications and customer requirements.
  • Calculate, prepare, and fill medical and specialty gas mixtures and pure gases using partial pressure and gravimetric techniques.
  • Test and certify incoming raw materials prior to use in production to ensure they meet required specifications.
  • Process cylinders for shipment, including painting, labeling, preparing valves, and generating certificates of analysis.
  • Maintain complete and accurate quality control records and documentation in compliance with company policies and applicable regulations.
  • Handle, move, and load gas cylinders as required to support testing, production, and shipment activities.
  • Participate in all required safety training and activities, and actively maintain a safe, compliant laboratory work environment.
  • Apply knowledge of chromatographic peak characteristics and illusion order concepts to interpret analytical results and troubleshoot issues.
  • Collaborate with team members and other laboratory personnel to support continuous improvement of analytical methods and processes.

Essential Skills

  • Experience in an analytical laboratory environment performing testing, quality control, or related chemistry work (2 years of analytical laboratory experience required if no relevant degree).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience (BS in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, OR 2 years of analytical laboratory experience).
  • Hands‑on experience with gas chromatography (GC) and GCP‑type systems for analytical testing.
  • Ability to operate GC controlling software, including systems such as Galaxy and Compass GC control software.
  • Experience using spectroscopic techniques, including Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, for gas analysis.
  • Familiarity with CO₂ analyzers and measurement of gas concentration and purity.
  • Proficiency with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) for uploading, reviewing, and documenting analytical results.
  • Knowledge of laboratory quality control practices and compliance with good manufacturing practices (GMP) or similar quality systems.
  • Ability to handle toxic and hazardous chemicals safely, following established procedures and safety protocols.
  • Experience with gas handling systems, including connecting and disconnecting gas cylinders in ventilated cabinets.
  • Strong understanding of chromatographic principles, including peak characteristics and interpretation of chromatograms.
  • Capability to perform routine calibration, verification, and basic maintenance of analytical instruments.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in documentation, recordkeeping, and preparation of certificates of analysis.
  • Ability to work rotating day and night shifts, including weekends and holidays, in a 24/7 operational environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Entry‑level graduates in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with relevant chemical handling experience from school or internships are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience in toxic chemical handling is preferred and considered a strong asset.
  • Experience as a Laboratory Technician or Chemical Engineer in analytical or quality control environments is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with illusion order and peak characteristics in chromatographic analysis is advantageous.
  • Experience preparing gas mixtures using partial pressure and gravimetric techniques is a plus.
  • Ability to process cylinders for shipment, including painting, labeling, valve preparation, and documentation, is desirable.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to maintain a clean, orderly, and compliant laboratory workspace.

Work Environment

You will work in a very clean, well‑organized chemistry laboratory that focuses on the analysis of medical and specialty gases. The environment involves regular handling of extremely hazardous and toxic chemicals, gas cylinders, and advanced analytical instruments such as gas chromatographs (GC/GCP‑type systems), FTIR spectrometers, CO₂ analyzers, and gas handling systems within ventilated cabinets. Laboratory operations rely on Galaxy/Compass GC control software and a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for data management and documentation. The role follows a DuPont rotating schedule that provides 24/7 operational coverage, with structured rotations between day and night shifts. The schedule includes weekends and holidays based on the rotation rather than a traditional Monday–Friday workweek, and it offers longer stretches of consecutive days off compared to a standard schedule. The work culture emphasizes safety, regulatory compliance, and quality, with required safety training and active participation in maintaining a safe laboratory environment. Consultants receive eight paid holidays and accrue 40 hours of paid time off for every six months of tenure, and strong performance as a contractor can lead to consideration for permanent employment in a growing industry with significant opportunities for advancement.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $28.00/hr.
