Job description

The Department of Pathology is seeking an Assistant Research Scientist who will have overall responsibility for the procurement, preparation, and disbursement of human post-mortem brain tissue for the NIH NeuroBioBank contract, supervises associated staff members, manages all aspects of the workflow for the histologic workup of donated cases, and maintains inventory and the database for donor cases. This position is 100% time. Hours will be Monday-Friday from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.

Duties to include:

         Performs or supervises procurement, processing, and disbursement of human post-mortem brain tissue

         Supervises and manages technical personnel associated with NeuroBioBank contract and INRL

         Oversees completion of all deliverables for the NeuroBioBank contract

         Oversee scientific research performed in the INRL

The Department of Pathology is part of UI Health Care, a comprehensive health sciences center that serves Iowa and the region, as well as patients referred from the United States and overseas. Required Qualifications:

         Requires a PhD in pathology, neuroscience, biomedical science, or a related discipline.

         3 years of laboratory experience, including sample management/tracking or inventory management.

         Requires demonstrated human neuroanatomy knowledge.

         At least two years of experience supervising staff or students.

         Requires excellent written and verbal communication skills.

         Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

         Ability to multitask and efficiently prioritize tasks independently.

Desirable Qualifications:

         Certification in biorepository management (QBRS or equivalent) is highly desirable.

         Previous brain banking or other biorepository management experience is highly desirable.

         Experience in designing experiments, gathering and recording data, and presenting results is highly desirable.

         Previous experience with outreach and education, particularly to potential brain donors is highly desirable.

         Experience with inventory/project management software is highly desirable.

         Experience with human or animal neuropathology is desirable.

         Ability to carry out research histology assays (particularly immunohistochemistry for human species) is desirable.
