Job description

Job Title: Director of Laboratory
Location: Roanoke, VA
Salary Range: $90,000 to $150,000 per year
Job Summary: The Hospital Laboratory Director is responsible for leading and directing the training, development, and supervision of laboratory personnel. They plan and schedule laboratory activities, ensure compliance with established policies and procedures, and operate the laboratory on a cost-effective basis. The Director is accountable for the accuracy and reliability of all laboratory services and actively supports and complies with all hospital and company policies and procedures.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Ensure all testing is performed according to established procedures and quality control policies.
  • Manage subordinate associates, including hiring, firing, evaluating performance, handling grievances, and coaching for professional development.
  • Anticipate departmental needs and establish long and short-range goals, providing direction to ensure implementation and goal attainment, and measure compliance in collaboration with administration.
  • Prepare monthly reports of laboratory activities and submit them to the Director as directed.
  • Establish necessary budgetary controls and maintain costs within budgeting constraints.
  • Implement and coordinate Point-of-Care-Testing (POCT) within the hospital.
  • Make recommendations for the purchase of capital equipment.
  • Investigate and resolve problems and inform the Director of all major issues.
  • Maintain all documents needed for Federal/State inspections and ensure the laboratory maintains certification in all testing areas and retains its license.
  • Execute Safety and Infectious Control Procedures to ensure patient, staff, and visitor safety.
  • Promote mutual respect and professionalism throughout the hospital.
  • Ensure that client inquiries and problems are handled professionally and expeditiously.
  • Perform other duties as directed by competent authority.
Qualifications:
  • MT (ASCP) or equivalent for certification as a general laboratory supervisor under C.L.I.A. 1967.
  • At least 5 years of management experience in a hospital laboratory.
  • Graduate degree or course work in business administration or a related field is highly desirable.
  • Detailed knowledge of laboratory operations, hospital financial operations, and laboratory and hospital information systems.
  • Ability to work with and communicate effectively with physicians, hospital and company leadership, staff, and customers.
Other Requirements:
  • No state licensing required in Virginia.
  • Relocation is available for this position.
  • Trauma hospital experience is required.
  • ASCP is required / C.L.I.A. qualified.
  • Reports to the Director of Lab Operations.
  • This is an academic/teaching hospital.
  • Needs to come from no less than a 500-bed hospital.
  • New wing at the hospital will go live in 2025.
