Job Summary

The Laboratory Assistant supports daily laboratory operations by assisting with sample handling, reagent preparation, equipment maintenance, documentation, and general laboratory organization. This role ensures laboratory activities are performed efficiently, safely, and in compliance with applicable quality systems, regulatory requirements, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with receipt, labeling, logging, storage, and disposal of laboratory samples in accordance with established procedures.

  • Prepare assays, positive controls, and other laboratory materials following SOPs and work instructions.

  • Perform routine laboratory tasks such as aliquoting, dilutions, and basic testing under supervision.

  • Clean, organize, and maintain laboratory workspaces, equipment, and supplies.

  • Assist with inventory management, including monitoring stock levels, restocking supplies, and notifying supervisors of shortages.

  • Operate basic laboratory equipment (e.g., pipettes, centrifuges, vortex) after appropriate training.

  • Perform routine equipment checks, cleaning, and documentation.

  • Accurately complete laboratory logs, forms, and records to ensure traceability and data integrity.

  • Follow all safety, biosafety, and chemical hygiene procedures at all times.

  • Support quality activities, including adherence to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and quality system requirements (e.g., ISO, CAP, CLIA, as applicable).

  • Assist senior laboratory staff with projects as assigned.

  • Participate in training, competency assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • Associate degree in a scientific field (biology, chemistry, biotechnology, or related) preferred

Experience

  • Previous laboratory experience preferred but not required

  • Entry-level candidates with relevant coursework or training will be considered

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic understanding of laboratory safety practices and procedures

  • Ability to follow written SOPs and verbal instructions accurately

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
