Job description

Overview
Element Materials Technology has an opportunity in Fort Wayne, Indiana for Microbiologist in its Food Testing Laboratory. This lab plays a leading role in food testing and environmental monitoring, ensuring a safe food supply in the Midwestern food market and beyond. The primary responsibility of the Microbiologist is to support laboratory operations by conducting microbiological testing on food products, raw materials, and environmental samples.
Responsibilities
  • Provide essential microbiological and chemical laboratory services for food and beverage manufacturers, private sectors, commodity exporters, and others in the food industry in line with Element's standards
  • Perform tests as directed by internal standard operating procedures, published methods, and laboratory accreditations
  • Operate under the supervision of more senior microbiologists and/or department managers
  • Maintain accurate records of all performed procedures in assisting in implementation of ISO / IEC 17025:2005 in the laboratory
  • Complete logs and record test data
  • Manage the functionality and calibration of laboratory equipment
  • Prepare media and reagents and maintain culture stocks
  • Work with indicator organisms and pathogens daily
  • Clean glassware and dispose of samples
  • Adhere to, support and follow all Element safety guidelines

Skills / Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of laboratory safety
  • Ability to work independently
  • HS diploma or GED certificate required. Associate or bachelor's degree preferred
  • 0-2 years' experience in a testing related field
  • Basic understanding of testing concepts
  • Possess strong computer skills
  • Must be able to work at least one weekend per month

Physical Demands:
  • Frequency of required physical force: Minimum (moderate)
  • Lifting requirements: lifting <50 lbs. often and > 50 lbs. on occasion
  • Ability to stand on feet for long periods of time
