Job description

Manager, Laboratory, Days, FT

The Laboratory Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the clinical laboratory in compliance with hospital policies, CAP accreditation requirements, and other regulatory agencies (CLIA, OSHA, etc.). This role ensures the delivery of high-quality diagnostic services by managing laboratory personnel, maintaining equipment and inventory, and ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards. The Laboratory Manager also plays a key role in policy development, performance improvement, and staff competency.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

· Oversee daily laboratory operations, including specimen collection, testing, and reporting across all departments (chemistry, hematology, microbiology, blood bank, etc.).

· Ensure laboratory services meet CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission, and state regulatory requirements.

· Develop, review, and maintain laboratory policies, procedures, and standard operating protocols in alignment with CAP checklist items.

· Monitor quality control, proficiency testing, and quality assurance activities; investigate out-of-range QC results and implement corrective actions.

· Supervise and schedule laboratory personnel, ensuring adequate coverage for all shifts and departments.

· Provide orientation, training, and ongoing competency assessment for staff, maintaining documentation per CAP standards.

· Oversee and participate in annual performance evaluations and continuing education compliance.

· Maintain accurate records for equipment calibration, maintenance logs, temperature logs, reagent verification, and documentation required for inspections.

· Serve as the point of contact for CAP inspections, internal audits, and regulatory surveys.

· Collaborate with Pathologist, Infection Control, Nursing, and Medical Staff to ensure timely and accurate test results and appropriate test utilization.

· Manage laboratory budget, inventory, and vendor relationships; ensure proper supply levels and cost-effective ordering.

· Ensure a safe working environment and compliance with safety regulations (chemical hygiene, biohazard handling, PPE).

· Implement and support laboratory-based performance improvement and risk management initiatives.

Role Minimum Qualifications

Required Education

· Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field.

Required Licensure and Certifications -At Hire

  • MLS certification by ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology), AMT (American Medical Technologists), or equivalent

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

· Minimum of four (4) years of progressive clinical laboratory experience, including two (2) years in a leadership or supervisory role.

· Strong leadership and organizational skills.

· Proficient in laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic health records (EHR).

· Knowledge of regulatory and accreditation standards (CAP, CLIA, OSHA, Joint Commission).

· Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities.

· Ability to manage staff performance, foster a collaborative team environment, and implement process improvements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with CAP inspections and knowledge of CAP checklist items and accreditation process
