Your opportunity:
We are recruiting for a Physics Laboratory Technician to provide teaching support services for the undergraduate physics laboratories within the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences. You will report to the Technical Operations Manager and contribute to the efficient and successful operations of the physics teaching laboratories. In coordination with other laboratory technical staff and course instructors, you will ensure that laboratory equipment and instruments are functional and available to students as required by course schedules. Drawing upon your solid communication skills, the incumbent will serve as a resource to provide direction on laboratory policies and protocols, as well as, experimental procedures and equipment.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Acting as the first point of contact for general lab enquiries.
- Collaborating with staff and course instructors to determine lab set up requirements.
- Setting-up labs/workshops according to research and/or course schedules.
- Providing detailed explanations and demonstrating procedures to students and/or employees on lab techniques, experimental procedures and protocols.
- Troubleshooting issues with lab equipment and/or workstations.
- Checking to ensure equipment is in working order.
- Troubleshooting routine hardware/software issues.
- Serving as a technical resource on laboratory protocols, and experimental procedures and equipment.
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics and/or Engineering, or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
- Minimum of two years of related job experience working in a physics laboratory setting, preferably in a post-secondary environment.
- Demonstrated experience using and troubleshooting equipment commonly found in a physics laboratory, including smart cart systems, oscilloscopes, power supplies, function generators, multi-meters, amplifiers, etc.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 suite applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive, SharePoint, etc.).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skill.
- Excellent organizational skills with attention to details.
- Demonstrated ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team.
- Must have the ability to exercise sound judgment.
- Must have the physical stamina to effectively carry out the duties associated with the position as this position involves a considerable amount of walking and standing on a daily basis and occasional lifting.
