MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
1. Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Cytotechnology, Histotechnology (Medical Laboratory Science) or related field
OR
Associate's Degree in Medical (Clinical) Laboratory Technology or related field
2. Current licensure as required by the state in which services will be provided:
WV: Licensed in one of the following:
High Complexity Testing Personnel (HCTP) License
Cytotechnologist
Histotechnologist
PA: No State License requirement
OH: No State License requirement
MD: No State License requirement
EXPERIENCE:
1. Four (4) years' experience as a Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Technician, Histotechnologist or Cytotechnologist.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. One of the following national certifications through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT):

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Assist the Managers in the supervision of all lab areas to assure appropriate personnel coverage. Assist with ensuring adequate staffing and appropriate staff in support of the hospital's mission of patient care.
2. Participates in the orientation of new staff. Provides input for staff's annual performance appraisals, disciplinary actions and terminations, based on documented performance within time frames established by the institution.
3. Coordinates and ensures all Reference Laboratory specimens are sent to appropriate reference laboratory and results are received within specified time frame.
4. In conjunction with LIS personnel and technical staff coordinates all computer downtime activities in accordance with standard operating procedures.
5. Operates and supervises the operation of laboratory equipment consistent with standard operating procedure and promptly prepares patient specimens in accordance with standard operating policies.
6. Solicits and provides input for the development and/or revision of standard operating procedures and department policies.
7. Maintains working knowledge of current hospital and lab administrative and safety policies/ procedures as well as the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) if applicable, and applies these policies consistently and seeks management guidance when needed.
8. Responds, researches, and answers to customer inquiries and performs as variety of duties related to customer service in accordance with hospital and laboratory policies and procedures. Monitors customer service activities and day-to-day Specimen Processing and/or Phlebotomy activities to identify potential problems and provide possible solutions.
9. Requests input and direction, as needed, from the Medical Director(s), Administrative Director, and/or Manager(s) regarding medical and technical issues, employee training, quality assurance and quality control procedures.
10. Organizes time, materials and resources in an economical manner, prioritizing laboratory requests by assessing and adjusting workload and staffing to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency.
11. Participates in various activities (i.e., staff meetings, in-services, etc.) to disseminate information to laboratory staff, allied health personnel, Medical Director(s), physicians and nurses by written and/or verbal means.
12. Maintains laboratory communication and ensures that information concerning new policies and procedures is available to staff in a timely manner and is incorporated into routine policies and procedures.
13. Reviews and evaluates, as needed, quality control records and test results to determine analytical errors, shifts and trends and correlates data to assure quality patient test results.
14. Assists in organizing time, materials and resources in an economical manner, and prioritizing laboratory requests by assessing and arranging workload throughout all laboratory sections within the division to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency.
15. Assures daily completeness of all workload within established turnaround times by flexing organization of work according to test ordering status (e.g., routine, STAT, ASAP, emergency), and by reviewing pending test results (e.g., daily monitoring, turnaround studies).
16. Initiates effective communication with supervisory personnel and all other laboratory personnel, other hospital departments and patient/public, as necessary to assure dissemination of information and the identification/resolution of problems in support of the hospital's mission of patient care.
17. May participate in the technical and theoretical instruction, supervision and evaluation of residents and students of the School of Medicine, as established by laboratory policies (e.g., laboratory objectives, evaluation forms).

Additional Job Description:
- Oversees daily operation of full-service cytogenetics lab offering pre- and post-natal testing for congenital and oncology specimen
- Works with the Lab Manager, Technical Director and Laboratory Medical Director to ensure proper functioning of the lab
- Creates patient reports for karyotypes and FISH including proper cytogenetic nomenclature for interpretation and review by Lab Medical Director
- Provides input into performance evaluations of other laboratory personnel
- Assist Technical Director in maintenance and update of procedure manual as well as validation of new tests
- Assists in coordinating the orientation and training of new technologists
- Responsible for staff compliance with test procedures and quality protocols
- Closely monitors specimen turnaround time and coordinates daily workload and staffing requirements. Responsible for ensuring and maintaining quality control and quality assurance measures in the laboratory.
- Performs duties of cytogenetic technologist as needed.
