What is a laboratory accessioner?

Laboratory accessioners are professionals responsible for receiving, labeling, and processing specimens—such as blood, tissue, or urine—delivered to a laboratory for testing. They ensure that all samples are properly documented, entered into laboratory information systems, and prepared for analysis by lab technicians or technologists. Their work is crucial in maintaining the integrity and traceability of samples, minimizing errors, and ensuring that patient information is handled accurately and confidentially.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a laboratory accessioner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Laboratory Accessioner, you need attention to detail, organizational skills, and a high school diploma or equivalent, with some employers preferring prior laboratory or specimen handling experience. Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS), barcode scanners, and sample tracking software is typically required. Strong communication, time management, and the ability to work accurately under pressure are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies are crucial to ensure accurate specimen processing, minimize errors, and maintain the integrity of laboratory operations.

What are some common challenges laboratory accessioners face when handling high sample volumes, and how can they effectively manage them?

Laboratory Accessioners often encounter challenges during periods of high sample volume, such as maintaining accuracy while working quickly and ensuring all specimens are properly labeled and entered into the system. To manage these demands, it's important to stay organized, follow established protocols closely, and communicate proactively with laboratory technicians and supervisors. Utilizing checklists and double-checking entries can help reduce errors, and seeking support from team members during peak times can help maintain workflow efficiency.
