Job description

A 240-bed acute care hospital in Portsmouth is seeking an experienced RN Manager to lead its Labor & Delivery unit. This regional medical center serves communities across New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts and is recognized as the area’s only ACS Verified Level II Trauma Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center.

The Labor & Delivery department is a comprehensive perinatal unit supporting a full spectrum of maternal and newborn care in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.

Position Overview

This role provides leadership for an 18-bed Labor and Delivery unit that includes labor rooms, postpartum beds, triage and antepartum space, pediatric rooms, surgical beds, a Level II nursery, and an OB operating room. The unit is supported by a multidisciplinary team of approximately 27 FTEs, including RNs, an OB nurse navigator, lactation consultants, and support staff.

The RN Manager is responsible for daily operations, staff leadership, quality outcomes, and patient experience across the perinatal service line, while working closely with clinical leadership to maintain safe, evidence-based care standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead daily operations of the Labor & Delivery unit across all phases of maternal and newborn care
• Manage staffing, scheduling, and resource allocation to support safe patient care delivery
• Conduct employee and patient rounding to support quality care and patient satisfaction
• Partner with the Perinatal Safety Nurse to support staff competency development and clinical education
• Oversee hiring, onboarding, performance evaluations, and employee development planning
• Support disciplinary processes in collaboration with leadership when needed
• Monitor quality metrics, patient outcomes, and core clinical measures
• Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, nursing standards, and perinatal best practices
• Assist with unit budgeting and support efficient use of resources
• Promote a culture of safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement

Qualifications

• 3–7 years of Labor & Delivery experience in an acute care setting required
• 3–7 years of Labor & Delivery leadership experience required
• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred
• Current New Hampshire RN license or compact state RN license required
• Strong background in perinatal care, quality improvement, and team leadership
