What is a labeling job?

Labeling jobs involve identifying, tagging, or categorizing data, such as images, text, audio, or video, to help train machine learning models. These roles are crucial in preparing high-quality datasets for artificial intelligence systems, ensuring that the data is accurately annotated and easy for algorithms to understand. Labelers may work with specialized software to mark up objects, transcribe information, or classify content according to specific guidelines. This work is often done remotely and can range from simple tasks to more complex annotation requiring domain expertise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a labeling specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Labeling Specialist, you need strong attention to detail, knowledge of regulatory requirements, and experience with documentation management, often supported by a background in life sciences or a related field. Familiarity with labeling software, regulatory databases, and industry standards such as FDA or EMA guidelines is typically required. Excellent organizational skills, clear communication, and the ability to collaborate across departments help set top performers apart. These skills are essential to ensure labeling accuracy, regulatory compliance, and timely product approvals in highly regulated industries.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in labeling roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in labeling roles often encounter challenges such as maintaining high levels of accuracy and consistency when reviewing large volumes of data. Time management can also be demanding, as deadlines may be tight and tasks repetitive. To address these challenges, it's helpful to develop strong attention to detail, utilize quality assurance tools, and communicate proactively with team members to resolve uncertainties. Many teams also implement regular feedback sessions and clear guidelines to ensure consistency across projects.

Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION

As a Sysco Selector or as we like to refer them, "Industrial Athlete", you will handle an average of 1,500 cases per shift, with each case weighing around 30 pounds and some weighing up to 70 pounds. The role is highly physical - you'll be walking, standing, stretching, and bending constantly, often covering more than 10 kilometers in a single shift. Because the work is repetitive, the ideal candidate is self-motivated and enjoys challenging themselves. The hours typically appeal to night owls, with shifts usually starting early afternoon and ending early morning.

Responsibilities:

  • Hand-select orders within various warehouse environments with fluctuating temperatures, including Dry, Cooler, and Freezer areas.

  • Operate the Sysco Order Selection (SOS) unit to scan and create labels, ensuring labels are correctly placed on products.

  • Stack product on pallets following proper selecting procedures (e.g., no heavy-on-light, labels facing outward).

  • Frequently lift products weighing 1-75 pounds and up to 88 pounds; regularly reach, bend, and twist while operating a pallet jack and/or forklift, including retrieving items from lower shelves.

  • Operate an electric pallet jack or forklift to transport product.

  • Stage pallets for loading at the proper dock locations.

  • Shrink-wrap product on the loading dock.

  • Follow all sanitation requirements and company policies.

  • Maintain and safely operate all assigned equipment, including pallet jacks, SOS units, and personal protective equipment. Complete pre- and post-trip inspections and safely operate all mechanical equipment.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Must be 18+ years of age.

  • Able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English as required for the role and safety regulations.

  • Must pass all pre-employment testing (Background Check, Physical Abilities Test).

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Warehouse experience is an asset, but not required.

Hours of Work:

  • 4 days per week, typically 10-hour shifts.

  • Start times of 3:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m.

  • Work most statutory holidays; receive"floater"time off in lieu, which can be booked like vacation.

Compensation

  • Start:$28.35 per hour

  • After 2 years:$29.45 per hour

  • After 3 years:$30.55 per hour

  • After 4 years:$32.20 per hour

  • Night shift premium(as applicable).

  • Eligible for performance-based incentives/bonuses.
