Job description

STS Technical Design is hiring a Biomedical Lab Technician Intern in Brookfield, Wisconsin. This internship supports engineering, additive manufacturing and medical device production activities in a regulated laboratory environment.
This role is ideal for a motivated, detail-oriented student studying Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field who wants hands-on experience with 3D printing, cleanroom operations, medical device manufacturing, engineering documentation and quality systems.
Position Summary
The Biomedical Lab Technician Intern will support engineering and production activities involving FDM and resin 3D printers, post-processing of printed components, ISO Class 7 cleanroom work and medical device production support.
The intern will assist with product assembly, testing, engineering design projects, technical documentation, bills of materials and production files. This position also involves interpreting technical drawings and specifications, using hand and power tools and communicating project status to engineers and customers.
This internship provides hands-on experience in medical device manufacturing, engineering development and quality systems while working alongside experienced engineering professionals.
Schedule
STS Technical Design is seeking a candidate who is available to work during the summer and 8 to 16 hours per week during the school year.
Schedule may change on a weekly basis depending on project needs. Weekend work may be available if desired and when project work is available.

Educational Background and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Actively studying in a relevant field, including Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field
  • Hands-on experience with FDM and resin 3D printing, including academic, hobby or professional experience
  • Familiarity with ISO 13485 and ISO 9001 documentation and quality systems preferred
  • Previous lab, manufacturing or research experience desired but not required
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience using tools
  • CAD design experience with SolidWorks, Creo or Autodesk Fusion 360 preferred

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support ISO Class 7 cleanroom project work at the Brookfield office
  • Maintain and perform maintenance on 3D printers to keep equipment in optimal condition while following documented procedures
  • Support engineering tasks as needed
  • Deliver and drop off packages for project-related tasks
  • Maintain clean and organised workspaces in accordance with office standards
  • Support general lab and office upkeep as needed
  • Take out trash as requested
  • Work full-time hours during the summer and part-time hours during the school year
  • Support weekend work when desired and available

Approximate Time Allocation
  • 30 percent cleanroom activities and data logging
  • 30 percent standard printing project processing
  • 20 percent project review, setup and quoting
  • 10 percent ISO documentation updates
  • 10 percent maintaining workspaces

Time allocation is subject to change depending on available project work.

Essential Functions
  • Support engineering and medical device manufacturing projects through hands-on operation of FDM and resin 3D printing equipment
  • Set up 3D printers, perform routine maintenance, monitor prints and post-process printed components
  • Perform production activities within an ISO Class 7 cleanroom
  • Follow ISO 13485, ISO 9001, documented work instructions, quality procedures and safety requirements
  • Assist with product assembly, inspection, testing, packaging, labeling and documentation for medical device and engineering projects
  • Prepare and maintain production records, engineering documentation, bills of materials, work instructions and project files
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, standard operating procedures and manufacturing documentation
  • Assist engineers with prototype development, design verification activities, product evaluations and other engineering support tasks
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, measuring equipment and laboratory instruments safely and effectively
  • Perform routine data collection, data logging and project documentation
  • Maintain accurate records in accordance with quality management system requirements
  • Maintain 3D printers, laboratory equipment, cleanroom work areas and general workspaces in clean, organised and operational condition
  • Support project setup, quoting activities, inventory organisation, material preparation and administrative tasks related to engineering and manufacturing operations
  • Communicate project status, technical observations and potential issues effectively with engineering staff
  • Demonstrate professionalism and willingness to learn

Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged periods standing or sitting with PPE while working on projects
  • Required to wear full cleanroom PPE while performing cleanroom duties, including hair net, beard net, lab coat, rubber gloves and face mask
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Ability to lift equipment and materials weighing up to 45 lbs. as needed
