JOB TITLE: Laboratory Medical Technologist / Technician (3rd Shift)

Location: Moncks Corner SC

Department: Laboratory

Shift: 3rd Shift (Overnight) | Full-Time | Weekend/Holiday rotation as needed

JOB SUMMARY

The Medical Laboratory Technologist/Technician performs a broad range of diagnostic laboratory analyses and quality control procedures independently with minimal supervision. This role is responsible for generating accurate, timely, and clinically reliable test results while operating complex laboratory instrumentation, maintaining strict patient confidentiality, and adhering to regulatory compliance standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Technical Testing & Quality Assurance: Evaluate specimen integrity, prioritize testing, and perform diagnostic procedures. Conduct routine Quality Control (QC) and proficiency testing. Assist with method evaluations, manual updates, and CAP inspection readiness.
  • Instrumentation & Maintenance: Safely operate assigned laboratory instruments. Perform daily/routine preventive maintenance (PM), instrument QC, and technical troubleshooting to resolve equipment issues promptly.
  • Health Information Systems: Efficiently utilize Cerner/STAR to order, receive, cancel, and verify test results. Manage pending lists and accurately document all testing, QC, and maintenance activities.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Serve as a reliable contact for physicians, nursing staff, and interdepartmental personnel. Answer phone inquiries, communicate critical values accurately, and hand off relevant shift details effectively.
  • Safety & Compliance: Adhere strictly to hospital safety protocols, infection control guidelines, and HIPAA confidentiality policies. Comply with medical necessity/billing regulations and complete mandatory continuing education.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Technical Skills: Hands-on experience with automated lab instrumentation, diagnostic testing, and patient phlebotomy.
  • Systems Proficiency: Experience with Electronic Health Record (EHR) / Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) such as Cerner or STAR.
  • Core Competencies: Strong critical-thinking skills with the ability to work independently under time constraints and high-stress situations. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Physical & Environmental Demands:

    • Frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, and reaching.
    • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
    • Normal color vision and visual acuity required for specimen/order interpretation.
    • Routine exposure to biological specimens, blood, tissue, and biohazardous materials.
