Job Title: Medical Lab Scientist IJob Description

The Medical Lab Scientist I works as a generalist in the Core Laboratory, supporting a fast-paced 2nd shift environment. In this role, you assist medical laboratory scientists, technologists, lab assistants, phlebotomists, and care coordinators with overall lab workflow and operation of core laboratory instrumentation. You contribute directly to quality patient care by performing routine and complex testing, maintaining instruments, and ensuring accurate and timely results.

Responsibilities
  • Work as a generalist in the Core Lab, supporting 2nd shift operations in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Assist 2nd shift technologists, lab assistants, phlebotomists, and care coordinators with general lab flow and core lab instrumentation.
  • Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria and departmental procedures.
  • Perform routine and complex technical procedures in chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, coagulation, and other assigned areas following Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Monitor, operate, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation to ensure proper functionality and minimal downtime.
  • Demonstrate sound technical judgment in testing and problem solving, including resolving issues with specimens, results, or instruments.
  • Prepare, test, and evaluate new reagents or controls to support accurate and reliable testing.
  • Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures for all assigned instruments and test systems.
  • Conduct chemistry maintenance and quality control, urinalysis quality control, and hematology quality control as part of 2nd shift duties.
  • Report accurate and timely test results in accordance with laboratory protocols to support high-quality patient care.
  • Identify, replenish, and organize testing bench supplies to ensure continuous workflow.
  • Assist with specimen processing as needed, including handling, labeling, and preparing samples for analysis.
  • Maintain a safe work environment by following safety protocols and consistently wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues, demonstrating strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Adapt to changing business needs, including working overtime or other shifts when required.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or qualifications that meet local regulatory CLIA or state requirements.
  • Minimum 0–2 years of clinical laboratory testing experience.
  • Either ASCP or AMT certification is required; Medical Lab Technicians must be certified.
  • Eligibility to sit for the MLS exam or completion of an MLS program is acceptable for consideration.
  • Ability to perform specimen processing, including handling and preparation for testing.
  • Hands-on experience with coagulation testing, including automated coagulation systems.
  • Experience with urinalysis, both automated and manual methods.
  • Experience with hematology testing, both automated and manual methods.
  • Experience with chemistry testing, including automated and manual procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively within a team environment.
  • Proficiency with computers and comfort working with electronic systems.
  • High level of attention to detail, with strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to pass a standardized color vision screen.
  • Flexibility to work overtime or adjust shifts based on business needs.
  • Clinical lab experience, relevant schooling, or certification is required; candidates without any of these cannot be considered.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with laboratory information systems (LIS), particularly SoftLab, is highly desirable.
  • Experience with electronic medical record (EMR) systems, specifically Cerner Community Works, is a plus.
  • Medical Lab Technician with a 2-year MLT degree or Medical Lab Scientist / Medical Technologist with a 4-year BS degree will be accepted.
  • Familiarity with automated and manual workflows across chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, and coagulation testing.
  • Strong problem-solving skills in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively in a high-volume environment.
Work Environment

This role is based in a Core Laboratory that operates as a fast-paced, 2nd shift environment requiring strong teamwork and clear communication. You will work with a range of automated and manual instrumentation in chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, coagulation, and specimen processing, supported by laboratory information systems such as SoftLab and EMR systems such as Cerner Community Works. The scheduled hours are 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with rotating weekend coverage as part of the shift structure. The laboratory follows strict safety protocols, and you are expected to maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace while consistently wearing appropriate personal protective equipment. This is a Contract position based out of Wichita, KS.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.31 - $35.31/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
