Job Description:
Job Summary: The Laboratory Support Specialist provides clinical operations and technical support in a complex clinical laboratory setting to perform multiple phases of the testing process (e.g., pre-analytical process, positive patient identification, specimen acceptability verification and rejection, specimen processing, and specimen packaging and shipping). May perform waived or limited moderately complex testing to meet associated equipment maintenance and daily Quality Assurance/Quality Control requirements. Performs other post-analytic functions and support duties to include, but not limited to, specimen management, phlebotomy, customer support and service recovery, inventory control and process improvement.
Essential Job Functions & Accountabilities:
  1. Performs department-specific specimen management functions including: specimen transport, tracking, retrieval, storage and disposal. Verify patient identification and/or specimen acceptability criteria.
  2. Transports blood products or supplies in support of ED Trauma Services and external customer needs.
  3. Complies with all Federal, State and Local regulatory requirements related to health care delivery without violation of HIPAA. Complies with Network health and safety policies, procedures, and practices.
  4. Transcribes data that has been previously recorded and reviewed by certified personnel or produced automatically by an instrument or computer generated.
  5. Phlebotomy collections with proper patient identification as assigned.
  6. Assists licensed personnel with locating specimens and specimen integrity issues.
  7. Assists with monitoring the department pending and overdue lists, which includes searching, locating, following up and filing appropriate documentation (e.g. Test Not Performed (TNP), Missing Specimen (MSP), and Quality Not Sufficient (QNS), tracking notes).
  8. Cleans, organizes and maintains work area, glassware and laboratory equipment (e.g., refrigerators, freezers and supply cabinets, as needed).
  9. Performs other departmental tasks such as filing, archiving and retrieving slides, reports, requisitions and other documentation. Responds to telephone inquiries.
  10. Assists with supply monitoring, ordering, inventory and storage to ensure adequate supply.
  11. Communicates information and/or concerns to appropriate individuals within the department and across shifts.
  12. Maintains competencies as required to perform section specific duties and maintains industry awareness for new developments and/or changes in policies and procedures. Reads written and electronic communications, postings and protocols.
  13. Maintains a high level of customer service at all times, while recognizing and initiating service recovery with professionalism and courtesy.
  14. May perform waived or moderately complex testing in accordance with established laboratory procedures and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
  • Must be a Certified Phlebotomist (CPT) or Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant (CMLA) through one of the following: American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP); or American Medical Technologists (AMT); or National Healthcareer Association.
  • 2 plus years working as a Certified Phlebotomist or Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant.
