Job Title: Sample Support Technician

Reports to: Lab Supervisor / Manager

Department: Inorganics and/or Organics

Location: Calgary

Fixed Term (Contract) until end of October, 2026

Basic Purpose:

Disposal of sample waste and ensuring all relevant procedures are followed safely and accurately. This is similar to a 'general labour' position in a fast-paced, production type of environment involving heavy lifting (up to 40lbs), repetitive tasks and physical work. 

Key Accountability/Responsibilities:

  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure accuracy, quality of work and compliance.
  • Follow all laboratory safety rules and regulations diligently. Adhere to BV Code of Ethics Policy.
  • General lab support in the environmental processing department to provide support in regards to sample distribution, preparation (grinding of rock & soil samples etc.) and archiving functions.
  • Ensure that all assigned and changing deadlines / Turnaround times are consistently met.
  • Prioritize jobs according to Rush and client specific deadlines.
  • Process email as required.
  • Employs proper lab techniques to minimize risk of miss-scanning and loss of sample. Ensure that cross contamination/mislabelling between samples and other materials does not occur.
  • Provide support to other members of the section.
  • Responsible for ensuring that Good House Keeping standards are followed and sustained at all times. Maintain department in a clean, safe and organized manner.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by Supervisor/ Team Lead or Manager.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • High School education at minimum
  • Possess strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities and tight timelines.
  • Ability to evaluate priorities and multitasking accordingly.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good record keeping skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to accurately follow instructions.
  • Excellent computer skills, proficient in MS Office
  • Good communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Dynamic, energetic, motivated professional with a business outlook and "can-do" attitude.

Working Conditions:

  • Expected to perform repetitive physical work as required and according to deadlines.
  • Time pressures to meet established deadlines. Changing priorities and balancing workload to meet new constraints.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment.
  • Require flexible working hours and shift work, including weekends.
  • Exposure to Hazardous materials is present in this role requiring use of established safety procedures and appropriate equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 40Lbs.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
