Microbiology Laboratory Technician (Cannabis Testing Laboratory)

Location: Westminster, MD
Job Type: Full-Time
Pay: $20-$22/hour (commensurate with experience)
Schedule: Monday-Friday |Shift (Monday - 1:00PM-9:00PM, Tuesday-Friday - 11:00AM-7:00PM, or as needed to meet turnaround times)

Job Overview

Maryland Cannalytics is seeking a Microbiology Laboratory Technician to support our state-licensed cannabis testing laboratory serving the Maryland cannabis market. This is a full-time, in-lab position within a fast-paced, production-driven, and highly regulated environment.

This role is responsible for microbiological testing, sample preparation, quality control, inventory management, cannabis tracking, and accurate documentation in accordance with Maryland cannabis regulations and ISO/IEC 17025 quality standards.

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong laboratory practices, attention to detail, and the ability to maintain accuracy, compliance, and efficiency while supporting critical laboratory operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform microbiological testing of cannabis and cannabis products utilizing traditional culture techniques and qPCR methodologies
  • Conduct testing for Total Aerobic Microbial Count (TAMC), Total Yeast and Mold Count (TYMC), Bile-Tolerant Gram-Negative Bacteria (BTGN), E. coli, and Salmonella
  • Prepare samples independently using aseptic techniques and maintain sample integrity throughout testing
  • Prepare and document reagents, media, solutions, and testing materials as required
  • Ensure compliance with Maryland cannabis regulations, ISO/IEC 17025 standards, and internal SOPs
  • Maintain accurate records in accordance with Good Documentation Practices (GDP)
  • Perform routine equipment cleaning, maintenance, performance checks, and basic troubleshooting
  • Maintain chain-of-custody and accurate cannabis tracking, including destruction documentation
  • Utilize LIMS and Microsoft Office applications for documentation, workflow management, and reporting
  • Assist with method verification, validation, proficiency testing, and quality assurance initiatives
  • Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies, consumables, reagents, and media
  • Support sample intake, accessioning, and laboratory workflow activities
  • Perform laboratory cleaning and sanitation activities in accordance with laboratory standards
  • Participate in ongoing training and competency assessments
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and process efficiencies
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by laboratory management
Required Qualifications
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to meet Maryland state cannabis employment requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant laboratory experience; OR
  • 1 year of laboratory experience plus successful completion of a laboratory skills assessment
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to follow SOPs and work within a regulated laboratory environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and laboratory information management systems (LIMS)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, or related scientific field
  • Experience with microbiological testing methodologies
  • Experience with aseptic technique and culture-based microbiology
  • Experience with qPCR workflows and instrumentation
  • Experience in cannabis, pharmaceutical, environmental, food safety, or clinical laboratories
  • Familiarity with ISO/IEC 17025 quality systems and accreditation requirements
  • Experience using LIMS platforms
Work Environment
  • Fast-paced, production-driven laboratory environment
  • Continuous video surveillance in accordance with state cannabis regulations
  • Required use of PPE (lab coat, gloves, eye protection, and other safety equipment)
  • Exposure to chemicals, biological materials, fumes, airborne particles, and laboratory equipment
  • Moderate to loud noise levels
  • Frequent interruptions and changing priorities throughout the workday
