Job description

Position Summary

This is a student position providing support for the teaching laboratories for chemistry courses. The student will assist laboratory instructors with preparation, setup, implementation, and cleanup of laboratory activities; help students during scheduled laboratory periods; and maintain laboratory materials, equipment, and spaces. Duties may be performed both during and outside scheduled laboratory periods as needed to support the effective operation of the teaching laboratories. Availability during a laboratory period of general chemistry is preferred.

Essential Job Functions

Responsibilities include the following:

  1. Assist laboratory instructors in preparing, setting up, and implementing laboratory activities.
  2. Obtain chemicals and laboratory materials from storage and return them after use.
  3. Distribute and organize chemicals, equipment, and laboratory materials at the appropriate locations before and during laboratory periods and collect and return materials after use.
  4. Prepare solutions and other laboratory materials using appropriate techniques and procedures.
  5. Maintain and organize laboratory equipment and supplies and clean laboratory and preparation spaces.
  6. Test experiments and laboratory procedures to ensure that they function as intended before use with students.
  7. Read laboratory instructions and provide feedback to the instructor regarding clarity, procedures, and potential issues.
  8. Record and analyze data related to course experiments as assigned.
  9. Answer student questions and monitor student progress during scheduled laboratory periods.
  10. Clean laboratory benches, cabinets, equipment, and other laboratory areas as needed.
  11. Dispose of chemical and other laboratory waste in accordance with college policies and procedures.
  12. Perform other tasks related to the preparation, operation, and functioning of the teaching laboratories in the chemistry and biochemistry programs as assigned.

The student in this position must comply with all safety mandates, including wearing pants, a laboratory coat, and safety glasses as required while working in laboratory and preparation spaces. The position is open to work study students; the successful student candidate must have completed a college-level chemistry course with laboratory.

Qualifications/Prerequisites:

  1. SKILLS
    1. The worker will have had experience with safe laboratory practice and with analytical balances and glassware. 
  1. EMPLOYMENT EXPERIENCE
    1.  No previous employment experience is required.
  1. EDUCATION
  1. The worker will have completed at least one course in chemistry and will have completed the laboratory from the course for which the worker is applying for (at Albright or the equivalent at another institution).
