Job description

The University of Rio Grande / Rio Grande Community College announces an opening for a Nursing Lab Assistant. This full-time, 12-month administrative position collaborates with the RN Nursing faculty to provide learning experiences that facilitate students' development of psychomotor and clinical reasoning skills. This position provides initial instruction, reinforces and guides student performance with previously learned nursing skills, and evaluates student's learning and performance. The position serves as an additional resource to the Simulation Specialist with regards to developing and running clinical simulations.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

  • Coordinates day to day activities and services of the nursing skills lab area including scheduling, lab set up, management of lab equipment and supplies.
  • Coordinates laboratory operations by developing, ordering, maintaining and setting up materials, equipment and instructional aides;
  • Supervises students and/or coordinates the work of other personnel related to nursing skills.
  • Assists instructors and/or students in the nursing skills lab.
  • Evaluates student skill performance in the nursing skills lab.
  • Ensures that the lab/classroom is clean, safe, and organized; promotes safe lab practices.
  • Repairs or coordinates the repair of lab equipment as required.
  • Develops the lab supplies budget line for the nursing programs each year
  • Researches, evaluates, and recommends new lab materials and equipment.
  • Collaborates with the Simulation Specialist to provide learning opportunities in simulation to promote the development of critical thinking, clinical judgement and clinical reasoning skills in nursing.
  • Acts as a liaison between nursing skills lab personnel and the Nursing Program Director.
  • Complies with the ACEN accreditation requirements.
  • Serves on School of Nursing ACEN committees with Nursing Faculty members.
  • Attends Nursing Faculty of the Whole Meetings
  • Establishes and updates laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports.
  • Assists the Simulation Specialists with simulations which can include set up, running the simulation, pre-brief and debriefing students.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
  • Nursing skills, equipment, and technology used in the nursing area.
  • Nursing Lab facilities and services
  • Nursing Lab equipment and supplies.
  • Safety standards and practices used in lab/classroom settings.
  • Processes for maintaining and/or repairing lab equipment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Exposure to hazards related to working in medical waste/sharps environment.
  • Occasional lifting of objects up to 30 pounds.
  • Potential for exposure to contaminated blood and/or body fluid.
  • Subject to walking, sitting, standing, bending, reaching, kneeling, and stooping.
  • Work is performed in a standard office and lab environment

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
  • BSN required, MSN preferred (or willing to obtain)
  • Two (2) years experience in acute care nursing
  • Valid State of Ohio Registered Nurse license
