KAM Consultants is an environmental consulting firm with an in‑house laboratory specializing in lead, asbestos, and metal analysis. With over three decades of experience, we are committed to environmental safety and regulatory compliance, providing accurate, reliable testing services with rapid turnaround times. Our in‑house laboratory supports projects across all five boroughs of New York City and parts of New Jersey.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Laboratory Manager to lead our environmental testing operations, with a focus on lead and asbestos analysis. This role is for someone with prior laboratory management experience and strong organizational and operational skills, and the ability to effectively manage both people and processes. The Laboratory Manager will be responsible for overseeing day‑to‑day operations, ensuring adherence to quality control standards, and maintaining compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements. This is a hands‑on leadership role that balances technical oversight with team and operational management. While maintaining a strong understanding of laboratory workflows and analytical methods, this individual will play a key role in coordinating across teams, supporting staff, and driving efficient, organized operations. The role will also involve direct engagement with laboratory work as needed, including reviewing and supporting sample analysis, to maintain a strong understanding of overall lab processes. The ideal candidate brings a strong scientific background along with demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills. They are detail‑oriented, proactive, and comfortable working cross‑functionally while guiding a team in a fast‑paced environment.

Key Responsibilities Laboratory Leadership & Operations
  • Oversee laboratory workflow, capacity, and turnaround times to meet project demands and client expectations
  • Lead day‑to‑day operations, including sample processing, analysis, and reporting for lead and asbestos testing
  • Maintain hands‑on visibility into laboratory processes, including sample analysis and data review, to ensure technical accuracy and operational excellence
  • Manage staffing, scheduling, and resource allocation to support a high‑performing team
  • Own and continuously improve Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements, quality standards, and laboratory operations
  • Oversee inventory management, procurement, and resource planning for laboratory supplies and equipment to ensure uninterrupted operations and efficiency
  • Utilize and continuously improve the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), collaborating with internal teams to enhance workflow efficiency, data management, and reporting accuracy
  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase productivity, reduce errors, and support scalable laboratory operations
Quality & Regulatory Compliance
  • Serve as the primary point of accountability for maintaining compliance with all applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements specific to lead/asbestos (NYSDOH, NVLAP, AIHA, EPA, OSHA, NIOSH)
  • Ensure adherence to quality control standards and oversee the implementation and continuous improvement of QA/QC programs
  • Lead internal audits, inspections, and corrective action processes to uphold data integrity and laboratory certification standards
  • Track, manage, and ensure timely completion of all required proficiency testing, maintaining full compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards
  • Investigate deviations, discrepancies, and non‑conforming results, and implement appropriate corrective and preventive actions
Technical Oversight
  • Oversee analytical testing using industry‑standard methods, including Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS/GFAA), Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM)
  • Review and validate laboratory data and reports to ensure accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance
  • Interpret test results and prepare accurate and comprehensive reports for clients
  • Stay current with evolving methodologies, regulatory updates, and best practices in environmental testing (specifically lead and asbestos)
  • Lead, mentor, and develop laboratory staff, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement
  • Provide training and guidance on laboratory techniques, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance
  • Host biweekly lab meetings to review testing processes and reinforce best practices
Cross‑Functional Collaboration & Client Support
  • Partner with internal teams to ensure smooth project execution and communication
  • Communicate results clearly to clients and provide technical guidance
  • Maintain strong client relationships through responsive service
Qualifications
  • BS, MS, or PhD in Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a related field
  • 6+ years of laboratory experience, with a focus on environmental testing (lead and asbestos preferred)
  • 2+ years of laboratory management
  • 2+ years of people management or supervisory experience
  • Strong knowledge of analytical techniques and instrumentation, including AAS/GFAA, PLM, and TEM
  • Familiarity with regulatory standards and accreditation requirements (NYSDOH, NVLAP, AIHA, EPA, OSHA, NIOSH, ASTM)
  • Experience working in a regulated laboratory environment with QA/QC and compliance requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage operations, and prioritize effectively in a fast‑paced environment
  • High attention to detail and technical accuracy
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and operate effectively in a fast‑paced environment

Salary: $85,000 - $120,000 per year (commensurate with experience), plus potential signing bonus.

Status: Full Time/Part Time

Schedule
  • 8 hour shift M‑F
  • Day shift (somewhere around 9am - 5pm)
  • Weekend availability may be required
  • On‑call rotation may be required
  • Expected hours: 40 per week

Work Location: In person (required) Long Island City, NY 11106: Relocate before starting work (required).
