Job description

Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) / Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS)

Location: Longview & Marshall, Texas

Department: Hospital Laboratory Services

Employment Type: Full-Time

Schedule: Varied shifts; may include weekends, holidays, and on-call rotation

Position Summary

The MLT/CLS performs laboratory testing in a hospital environment to support the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of patients. This role carries out analytical procedures across various laboratory sections, ensures the accuracy and reliability of reported results, and adheres to all regulatory, quality, and safety standards. The technician/scientist works collaboratively with clinicians, nursing staff, and other laboratory personnel to provide timely and high-quality laboratory services to patients in the Longview and Marshall region.

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Testing & Analysis

  • Perform routine and complex testing in areas such as hematology, chemistry, blood bank, microbiology, urinalysis, and coagulation.
  • Evaluate and interpret test results, recognizing critical values and following established protocols for reporting.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instruments.

Quality & Compliance

  • Follow all standard operating procedures (SOPs) and quality control guidelines.
  • Participate in proficiency testing and quality improvement initiatives to ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, and hospital guidelines.
  • Document all activities accurately in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).

Safety & Infection Control

  • Adhere to biosafety, chemical safety, and infection-control standards.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Communicate test results, delays, and issues to clinical staff in a professional and timely manner.
  • Provide support during laboratory inspections and assist with training of students or new staff as requested.

Qualifications

Education & Certification

  • MLT: Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science; ASCP or equivalent certification preferred.
  • CLS/MLS: Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or related field; ASCP or equivalent certification required/preferred depending on hospital policy.

Experience

  • Previous clinical laboratory experience preferred; new graduates welcomed depending on department needs.

Skills

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established procedures.
  • Proficiency with laboratory instrumentation and computer systems.
  • Ability to prioritize workload in a fast-paced hospital environment.
