Job description

Overview
This is a 1st shift position (7:00 AM - 3:00 PM) based in Troutville, VA. We are seeking a skilled and motivated Quality Control Lab Technician to support our cement manufacturing operations. This is a salaried non-exempt role reporting to the Lab Supervisor, responsible for performing chemical and physical testing of Portland cement and raw materials in accordance with ASTM standards.
The base rate for this position is $23.60 per hour. A $1.50/hour shift differential applies to second and third shifts only.
Responsibilities
The Quality Control Lab Technician plays a critical role in ensuring product quality, consistency, and regulatory compliance through precise testing, data analysis, and reporting. This role requires strong attention to detail, a commitment to quality standards, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced industrial environment.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform chemical and physical testing in accordance with ASTM standards
  • Collect and prepare raw material and finished product samples
  • Analyze and report test results (daily, weekly, monthly)
  • Support process control and provide vacation relief for lab personnel as needed
  • Conduct water testing in compliance with Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) permits
  • Test specialty masonry products for color consistency during production
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain lab equipment; recommend improvements
  • Assist with sourcing and procurement of lab equipment and supplies
  • Implement and maintain laboratory procedures and best practices
  • Ensure adherence to safety, quality, and environmental standards

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related field preferred, or equivalent experience
    (Knowledge of elements, oxides, and raw materials is a strong asset)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word required
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Adaptability and willingness to take ownership of responsibilities
  • Familiarity with automated lab equipment is a plus
  • Flexibility to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed
