Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Medical Laboratory Scientists (MT/MLS)/Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT) are responsible for specimen processing, test performance and for reporting test results. MLS/MLTs perform a variety of complex chemical, microscopic, and bacteriologic tests and procedures and related duties, to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease, following established standards and practices.

Responsibilities for an MLS/MLT include but are not limited to:

  • Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment; including the processing of quality control, calibrations and patient specimens.
  • Following established protocols to perform testing of blood, urine, body fluids, tissues and other substances from patients
  • Performing venipuncture and capillary collections to obtain patient samples.
  • Demonstrating good skills in all forms of communication to ensure positive outcomes
  • Maintaining appropriate education and development
  • Working well with others in a spirit of teamwork and cooperation
  • Properly wear personal protective equipment to mitigate the risk of coming into contact with infectious materials.
  • Maintaining reagent and supply inventory levels including stocking, restocking and ordering of supplies.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience:
  • Preferred Experience: 1-3 years’ experience in a healthcare clinical setting with knowledge of basic laboratory skills.
  • Education:
  • Minimum Required Education: Associates degree in Medical Technology
  • Preferred Education: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science or a Chemical, Physical or Biological Science from an accredited institution or a degree with 16 hours in Chemistry, 3 hours in Mathematics
  • Certifications:
  • Preferred Certifications: American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent as an MLS/MT/MLT
