Position Overview

The Lab Assistant plays an important role in supporting laboratory operations and patient care within West Cancer Center. This position is responsible for preparing stains, solutions, and culture media, performing waived and moderately complex laboratory tests, and maintaining accurate specimen records. The Lab Assistant also assists with venipuncture as requested by the directing physician and helps ensure a safe and efficient laboratory environment by following all safety and infection control protocols. This role requires strong attention to detail, adaptability in a clinical setting, and a commitment to upholding West Cancer Center's vision and values.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive, accession, and process laboratory specimens.

  • Prepare stains, solutions, and culture media for use in testing.

  • Perform waived and moderately complex laboratory tests in accordance with CLIA standards.

  • Conduct venipuncture as requested by physicians.

  • Maintain accurate specimen records and documentation.

  • Monitor and maintain laboratory supply inventory.

  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment to ensure operational readiness.

  • Model professionalism and adhere to safety, confidentiality, and infection control practices.

  • Collaborate with physicians, staff, and patients to support seamless laboratory workflows.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Lab Director.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

Required:

  •  High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience with basic laboratory skills.

Preferred:

  • One (1) year of laboratory experience.

  • Certified Phlebotomist.

Substitution Allowed:

  • Completion of a Phlebotomy Program may be accepted in lieu of direct experience.

Skills & Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of laboratory safety and infection control procedures.

  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations.

  • Strong verbal communication skills with patients, physicians, and colleagues.

  • Ability to work effectively in a clinical environment with invasive and non-invasive patient contact.

  • Physically able to lift up to 25 lbs. and perform tasks requiring standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and fine motor skills.

  • Good balance, hand-eye coordination, and manual dexterity.

  • Ability to react quickly in emergency situations.
