Job Duties
The Department of Psychology at Virginia Military Institute is accepting applications for a part-time Laboratory Technician position. This position reports to the Department Head and provides support for multiple classes in the department to include lab classes, statistics courses, and research methods courses, among other responsibilities.
Job Duties:
• Perform routine laboratory maintenance
• Troubleshoot hardware and software problems
• Maintain laboratory supplies
• Assist in the development of policies, procedures, and/or methods for laboratory use and keeping the laboratory area organized and clean
• Assist in preparing for and conducting lab and research activities as needed - preparing sample charts, graphs, and reports from data, creating surveys, and conducting basic data analysis.
• Provide computing assistance as needed with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SPSS, and Outlook
• Train and/or demonstrate to students and/or other individuals a variety of lab procedures
• Attend lab, statistics, and research methods classes as needed
• Hold office hours to assist students with statistics and research related assignments and questions
• Perform other duties as assigned or required
Minimum Qualifications
• Ability to coordinate details of an experiment as well as anticipate and solve technical problems.
• Attention to detail, accuracy, and initiative.
• Excellent communication skills (oral, written, and listening).
• Ability to work well with others as part of a team.
• Ability to work independently on projects.
• Ability to manage multiple projects at once.
• Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Associate's degree or equivalent formal training in Psychology or related field.
Additional Considerations
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent formal training in Psychology or related field.
• Experience conducting research in social sciences.
• Ability to set-up and maintain a database, assist with data analysis using SPSS, data scoring and reduction, and familiarity with computer programming software such as Qualtrics, PEBL, e-prime, etc. or the ability to learn new software relevant to lab and research activities.
