Job Summary/Basic Function
Get hands-on experience
The Aquaponics Lab Assistant assists in all aspects of daily operations of the Aquaponics Lab at Shepherd University's Agricultural Innovation Center. No prior experience or coursework is necessary as long as applicants are open to hands-on learning about aquaculture systems, food production, and water quality. A successful Aquaponics Lab Assistant is flexible, curious, detail-oriented, and able to work independently.
This job is hands-on. Common tasks include, but are not limited to, testing water quality, preparing supplemental nutrients, planting seeds, pruning and harvesting plants, scrubbing fish tanks, cleaning, aiding in routine cleanings of the system, cleaning, and assisting in building future additions, modifications, and improvements to the system. Employees should wear work clothes which can get dirty and they can move comfortably in. Closed-toed shoes are required. Students may want to keep spare school clothes handy in case work clothes get very dirty. There may also be opportunities to help with tasks around the farm, outside of the Aquaponics Lab. Employees will be assigned tasks at the beginning of each shift.
