Job description

Introduction

POSITION SUMMARY:

Organizes and coordinates multiple functions in the Laboratory Department. Performs patient registration and accessions lab orders as appropriate. Centrifuges and processes blood to prepare for shipping and testing in all laboratory areas. Responds to phone inquiries in a timely manner and refers problems to the appropriate supervisor. Performs other clerical duties including maintaining specimen logs, pending lists, centrifuge maintenance and cleaning, and support communication amongst the team.

 SPECIFIC ELEMENTS & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 Demonstrates professionalism through consistent reliability, respectful communication, and adherence to company values, policies, and ethical standards. Maintains a positive attitude and represents the organization with integrity in all interactions.

 Handles and processes specimens in accordance with policy, ensuring proper identification.

 Maintains patient confidentiality per HIPAA guidelines.

 Maintains a clean working environment. Manage inventory efficiently; awareness of material outdates, stock rotations and reduce waste.

 Able to recognize and resolve problems utilizing independent judgement and critical thinking, relying on procedures and applying scientific knowledge.

 Communicate effectively to other shifts and interdepartmentally when appropriate, regarding patient and operational issues.

 Notify management or other key stakeholders of problems or issues, as appropriate.

 Documents corrective actions taken for problem resolution, including errors.

 Meets all personnel standards in governing, regulatory and accreditation requirements for clinical laboratory testing.

 Conducts education and training for new personnel, fellows, residents, students and visitors within the Laboratory scope of practice.

 Is aware of the role of the position and its potential impact on patient care, the work unit, the department and facility operations.

 Works effectively inter or intra-departmentally and with teams to meet patient needs and organizational goals.

Participates in quality and process improvement projects.

 Attends and participates in continuing education opportunities to maintain relevancy and currency in professional practices and standards.

 Performs other duties as assigned.
