Responsibilities
  • The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) functions as a laboratory professional who assists other laboratory personnel in specimen collection, specimen receiving, specimen processing, laboratory testing, process improvement, and quality initiatives.
  • Ensure specimens are obtained in accordance with laboratory guidelines.
  • Demonstrate proper communication skills to relate pertinent data or information about the patient or laboratory sample to appropriate care provider.
  • Follows proper protocols for specimen packaging and specimen transport.
  • Responsible for patient registration, lab test ordering, specimen receipt, accessioning, processing and specimen distribution according to protocol.
  • Demonstrates proper infection control practices, proper patient identification, performs proper prompt specimen transport.
  • Performs proper drug screen collection and processing, as assigned
  • Monitors phlebotomy draw list and assigns/dispatches phlebotomists to draw specimens as assigned.
  • Courier duties as assigned.
  • Performs laboratory tests in compliance with policies and procedures as assigned.
  • Assists in preparing laboratory equipment for testing.

Qualifications

Job Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic computer skills and strong customer service skills.

Preferred Job Requirements:

  • Certification from nationally recognized agency as a phlebotomist upon hire.
  • Certification from a nationally recognized agency as a medical lab assistant within 2 years of hire date.
  • Experience working in the clinical setting.
