Position Title: Permanent Pathologist Assistant 

Shifts Available: Monday-Friday, Variable 

Location: Panhandle, FL 32308

Job Responsibilities 

Skills and abilities of a Pathologist Assistant includes:  

  • Under direct or indirect supervision of a pathologist, performs accessioning, dissection, histologic sampling, and gross examination of a full range of anatomical specimens, following established protocols. 
  • Performs frozen sections and other intra-operative consultations within established protocol and procedural parameters. 
  • Clearly and accurately describes specimens and their measurements using canned dictation whenever appropriate. 
  • Verifies specimen identity to prevent medical errors. 
  • Uses correct specimen cassettes and starts tissue processor as needed. 
  • Performs special hospital procedures and protocols, such as cancer research studies. 
  • Safely operates Faxitron and other laboratory equipment. 
  • Trains and mentors new students and new hires. 
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Pathologist or Administrator. 

Job Requirements 

Successful candidates for the Pathologist Assistant: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in health or science field required. 
  • Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program required. 
  • Certification as a Pathologists’ Assistant by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) preferred.   

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES 

  1. Ability to speak clearly using dictation equipment.   
  2. Ability to recognize types of tissue and types of biopsies. 
  3. Self-directed and able to work with little to no supervision. 
  4. Ability to communicate effectively in both writing and speech. 
  5. Excellent judgment and decision-making skills. 
  6. Ability to troubleshoot and research problems. 
  7. Knowledge of and ability to abide by safety policies and procedures. 
  8. Strong interpersonal skills. 
  9. Ability to work weekends, holidays, evenings, and nights. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

  1. Standing for extended periods of time.   
  2. Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling up to 25 lbs. 
  3. Performing repetitive motion tasks for extended periods of time. 
  4. Ability to discern color. 
  5. Ability to work with/around laboratory chemicals/fumes.
