United Health Services is seeking a Phlebotomist for a job in Johnson City, New York.

United Health Service (UHS) is seeking a phlebotomist. Performs daily activities of the Support Services Department. Functions as a Phlebotomist fulfilling assignments on a rotational basis within the institution and external off-site coverage (I.e. Skilled Nursing Facility, PreAdmission Testing). Performs tasks such as Test Order Entry, Inpatient Venipuncture, OPD Venipuncture, Stock Rotation and Nursing Home draws. (If covering PAT, ability to perform EKG's is required). Responds and interacts with patients and customers in a courteous and professional manner, embracing the concepts and ideals of Service Excellence.

Job Responsibilities
  • Performs phlebotomy and specimen collection procedures, complying with required patient identification procedures, on inpatients and outpatients, including: Venipuncture (venous and capillary), 24Hr Urine Collection, Random Urine Collection, H.pylori Breath Test, and Glucose Tolerance Testing. Understands the applicability of fasting & non-fasting patient status to test viability. Selects appropriate venipuncture equipment with respect to patient age. Assess patient specific requirements, including appropriate venipuncture site with respect to vein access.

  • Performs data entry for test orders in the EHR; Ensure diagnosis codes meet Medical Necessity requirements. Acquires consent forms, prior authorization data and/ or ABN’s when applicable.

  • Demonstrates ability to organize and prioritize workload with respect to STAT and routine patient testing as well as the collection of timed draws within established guidelines.

  • As applicable, rotates as Outpatient department receptionist, tending to outpatients presenting for lab testing. Adheres to patient arrival order with priority given to fasting patients. Coordinates the clerical and phlebotomy functions ensuring patient serviced within designated turn-around-time and wait time guidelines. Performing necessary clinical support duties, answering phones, specimen collection issues and ensuring complete and accurate requisitions and test orders.

  • Observes patient during the entire procedure to detect signs of reaction and notify patient’s physician and/or nurse on hand if complications arise.

  • Executes downtime procedures whenever either HIS or LIS is out of service in addition to assisting with the system recovery for downtimes.

  • Actively participates in continuing education and quality improvement programs Trains new phlebotomists and technologists in phlebotomy and office process as requested.

  • Performs basic specimen processing ensuring specimen centrifugation & storage requirements are maintained until arrival in the Laboratory. Inpatient test samples are collected and sent directly to the lab technical testing departments for analysis.

  • Responsible for entry of accurate and complete EHR requisitions, validating identification, fax numbers, insurance and provider data, ensuring all providers are designated to receive appropriate reports.

  • Investigates specimen/requisition data gaps or inconsistencies to acquire or confirm necessary information; recommended steps to resolve issues to allow laboratory testing to be completed to the satisfaction of the patient and provider.

  • Performs specimen collection and transport from internal locations or wards, on a timely basis.

  • Performs transcription of external provider orders and standing orders into HER. Additional descriptors to consider:

  • Demonstrate understanding of the importance of specimen collection and specimen integrity in the delivery of patient care;

  • Demonstrate knowledge of collection equipment, various types of additives used, special precautions necessary and substances that can interfere in clinical analysis of blood constituents,

  • Maintain a clean, well-stocked and safe environment; follows sharps and biohazardous waste disposal guidelines and universal precautions policies.

  • Send supplies to provider offices for laboratory testing.

  • Assist in training of new employees. Performs other related duties as required.

Position Qualifications:

Minimum Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Preferred:

  • Completed Phlebotomy Training Program OR other MOA training;

  • 3 months' phlebotomy experience in an acute care setting;

  • knowledge of patient registration and lab test order entry;

  • knowledge of laboratory specimen processing procedures

Work Environment

  • Environmental Conditions: Work is performed at inpatient bedside locations, outpatient draw location, and or various other hospital locations (i.e. ED, OR). Locations are staffed with 1 - 10 employees. All locations have HVAC resources to maintain ambient temperature and humidity.
  • Physical Demands: Tasks require varying durations of sitting (0-2 hours), standing (0-2 Walking is often required to arrive at patient’s bedside or locations. Position requires close interaction between patients/coworkers on a frequent basis. Infrequent lifting of objects not greater than 25 lbs. is required.
  • Personal Protective Equipment: PPE is required for specific tasks and includes: Surgical gloves, lab coats, face shields, surgical or N95 masks and plexiglass counter shields.
