The Phlebotomist at United Health Services (UHS) plays an important role in delivering safe, accurate, and timely patient care by collecting and preparing specimens across inpatient, outpatient, and off-site settings. With a calm and compassionate approach, they verify patient information and test orders, explain procedures clearly, and help patients feel comfortable throughout the collection process. Working closely with laboratory and clinical teams, the Phlebotomist maintains specimen integrity, supports efficient operations, and contributes to reliable test results that help guide diagnosis and treatment. Essential Functions: 

• Perform phlebotomy and specimen collection for inpatient, outpatient, and assigned off-site patients, including venipuncture, capillary collection, urine collections, breath testing, and glucose tolerance testing, to support accurate and timely laboratory diagnosis 
• Verify patient identity, test orders, and collection requirements before each draw to protect patient safety, support specimen integrity, and reduce pre-analytic errors 
• Select appropriate collection equipment and assesses patient-specific factors, including age, vein access, fasting status, and tolerance for the procedure to deliver safe, high-quality specimen collection 
• Enter and verify laboratory test orders in the EHR, confirm diagnosis and authorization documentation when applicable, and resolve incomplete or inconsistent requisition details to support compliant order processing and uninterrupted patient care 
• Prioritize STAT, timed, and routine draws and organize workload across rotational assignments, including bedside, outpatient draw sites, nursing home coverage, and pre-admission testing support to meet turnaround-time expectations 
• Process, label, store, and transport specimens according to established procedures so samples arrive in the laboratory in proper condition for testing and analysis 
• Support front-end laboratory operations by assisting with outpatient reception, answering phones, coordinating patient flow, maintaining supply stock, and completing related clerical and operational tasks that keep the department running efficiently 

Scope and Impact: 

• Contribute directly to patient care, laboratory quality, and care team decision-making by obtaining accurate specimens that support diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment planning 
• Exercise judgment within established procedures to identify collection issues, patient reactions, documentation gaps, or specimen concerns and escalate concerns promptly to the appropriate clinician, nurse, or leader 
• Work under general supervision while maintaining accountability for assigned collections, documentation accuracy, specimen handling, and service standards across varied clinical settings 
• Build positive patient interactions at the point of care by explaining procedures clearly, helping reduce anxiety, and creating a professional, respectful experience during each encounter 
• Support department effectiveness by assisting with downtime workflows, system recovery activities, and onboarding or training support for new team members as assigned 
• As applicable to your role, support operational and departmental needs through occasional travel between organizational locations and, when required, operation of a system-owned vehicle; maintain eligibility to meet organizational driving requirements when such travel is necessary 

Compliance and Professional: 

• Follow established policies for patient identification, specimen labeling, infection prevention, sharps safety, biohazard disposal, PPE use, and standard precautions to maintain a safe clinical and laboratory environment 
• Maintain accurate, complete, and timely documentation in the EHR and related systems to support regulatory compliance, medical necessity requirements, and continuity of care 
• Complete required orientation, annual education, competency validation, and department training within established timeframes to remain current in phlebotomy practice and laboratory procedures 
• Protect patient privacy and confidentiality in all communications, documentation, and work activities in accordance with organizational policy and applicable healthcare regulations 
• Perform assigned duties during scheduled system downtimes and recovery periods using approved procedures to maintain service continuity and documentation accuracy 
• Adhere to current department on-call policy requirements to ensure timely patient care 
• Safeguard sensitive data by following established security policies and procedures, using systems responsibly, and promptly reporting potential security incidents, risks, or policy violations 
• As applicable to your role, support cybersecurity and data protection requirements throughout the supplier lifecycle by coordinating vendor risk assessments, monitoring third-party compliance, and promptly reporting identified supply chain or cybersecurity risks

Required: 

• High School Diploma or equivalent 

Preferred: 

• NHA Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) certification or equivalent 
• Driver License 
• Up to 1 year of direct experience performing the exact or very similar duties required by the job within the same role or function 
• Up to 1 year of experience in the same work environment or setting (hospital, practice, department/division) 
• Up to 1 year of technical/systems experience using specialized tools, software, or equipment required for the role 

• Work is performed in a healthcare environment with exposure to patients, medical equipment, and bodily fluids, requiring adherence to infection prevention and safety protocols  
• Role includes movement between inpatient units, outpatient draw sites, and off-site locations, with varying clinical conditions and patient populations 
• May involve periods of standing, walking, and interaction with clinical staff in a fast-paced setting with time-sensitive priorities 

• Requires extended periods of standing and walking (greater than 4 hours per day) while performing specimen collection across inpatient, outpatient, and off-site settings 
• Requires the ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 25–50 pounds on an occasional basis, including transporting supplies and specimens 
• Requires frequent bending or reaching during specimen collection, equipment use, and supply handling 
• Requires continuous or repetitive hand and arm movements for the majority of the workday, including venipuncture, labeling, and data entry 
• Requires fine motor skills, including pinching, gripping, and manipulation of small objects such as needles, vials, and lab equipment 
• Requires regular use of both hands to perform essential job functions 
• Requires sustained visual attention for reading labels, verifying patient information, and entering data into electronic health records
