Job description

Overview
Reports directly to the laboratory Support Supervisor assigned to the phlebotomy section. Performs venipuncture, heel puncture and finger puncture according to established procedures. Able to instruct patients correctly for collection of non blood specimens (urines, 24 hour urines, occult blood etc) Accessions specimens into the computer system. Processes specimens in the centrifugation area for distribution to the testing area or for proper storage. Maintains standard precautions at all times. Transports specimens to the laboratory as needed. Provides excellent customer service. May be required to work from various locations (Pavilion, North Campus, or Emerson) or float between various lab departments, as needed based on department needs and within scope of practice.

Age of Patients Served:
All Age Groups.
Required Education:
High School Diploma or GED.
Preferred Education:
Certification from a medical assistant program. Certification from a military medical or laboratory assistant program.
Necessary Skills:
1. Knowledge of venipunture and skin puncture procedures. 2. Ability to professionally and courteously interact with patients, visitors, co-workers and external laboratory customers. 3. Knowledge of basic computer data entry. 4. Ability to prioritize tasks and organize workload. 5. Knowledge of laboratory techniques in specimen handling and processing. 6. Must be able to handle stressful situations in a professional manner. 7. Must be detail oriented.
Required Experience:
Minimum two (2) years clinical or hospital experience
Preferred Experience:
Phlebotomy experience in a hospital inpatient setting with all age groups, specimens processing, experience using a laboratory information system for accessioning and specimen tracking.
