Primary Purpose
The Art and Design Metal Arts Operations Technician provides technical and operational support for Metal Arts studio facilities in collaboration with the Art and Design Program Director, faculty, and staff. This position helps maintain a safe, organized, and functional studio environment and supports instruction through equipment maintenance, hot and cold fabrication equipment operations, materials preparation, and training of student employees and studio/lab assistants. This position may also assist with Art and Design administrative tasks and outreach events ad hoc.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitor and supervise students during metal arts open lab times as needed.
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safe working conditions in metal arts studio spaces.
- Prepare, set up, and maintain studio spaces, equipment, and materials for instructional use.
- Monitor metal arts studio spaces in accordance with established procedures and safety guidelines.
- Monitor metal arts studio equipment; perform basic maintenance and report repair needs.
- Assist faculty and students with the safe and effective use of metal arts equipment, tools, and materials.
- Provide training and guidance to lab assistants and student workers on studio procedures and safety practices.
- Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and ensure proper use and availability of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Monitor inventory of supplies and materials; communicate needs for replenishment.
- Collaborate and communicate with faculty and program leadership regarding studio operations, safety, and support needs.
- Assist FAC administrative assistant, faculty, and staff with other duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of metal arts studio processes, including hot and cold fabrication methods, tools, equipment, and materials handling.
- Ability to safely operate and maintain metal arts equipment, including hot and cold fabrication equipment and related tools.
- Ability to have a flexible schedule to accommodate unpredictable disciplinary needs. Often requires weekends and evening shifts, particularly towards the end of each term.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently within established guidelines.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to provide clear instruction and training in a supportive and collaborative manner.
- Ability to identify and communicate maintenance, safety, and operational concerns.
- Ability to use software programs and database systems which include Microsoft Office Suite, email, website editing, basic desktop publishing, and modern office equipment.
Ergonomic Requirements
Regular office hours are established between 8 am - 5 pm during the workweek. A flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the responsibilities.
Incumbent must be able to function effectively in indoor metal arts studio environment engaged in active, hands-on work. Requires standing, walking, bending, and working with materials and equipment for extended periods. Requires to write, read written materials and computer screens, and ability to use telephonic conversations. Work may involve lifting and moving materials and equipment up to 75 lbs. May require use of personal protective equipment and the ability to work in environments with dust, heat, and metal arts materials. All individuals are required to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Minimum Requirements
Education:
- High School diploma or GED
Experience:
- One year of related professional work experience in metal arts production.
