Departmental Overview
The Department of Integrative Biology studies the evolution of life from molecular, functional, and ecological perspectives. Researchers in integrative biology work on organisms from across the tree of life in laboratories, in the field, and in museums.
The Lab is broadly interested in the origins of biodiversity. Our research centers on the rapid evolution of new fish species with novel ecology in relatively simple tropical ecosystems (salt lakes, volcanic craters). We integrate a variety of approaches including large-scale field experiments, population genomics, quantitative and functional genetics, phylogenetic comparative methods, natural history observations, functional morphology, and behavioral ecology. By mapping the complex relationships among genotype, phenotype, performance, fitness, and environment, we hope to gain a predictive understanding of the processes that drive adaptive diversification.
Position Summary
The Assistant Animal Technician assists the Martin Fish Speciation Lab in caring for fish specimens and in organizing specimens and tissue samples. This position provides support by training undergraduate assistants on lab protocols and accompanying lab inspectors during site visits.
Responsibilities
Daily Care and Maintenance

• Provides quality daily care to fish specimens, including feeding and cleaning tanks, to a variety of instructional fish, as well as maintaining upkeep on fish room air and water filters and other equipment

Specimen Organization

• Organize specimen and tissue samples and participate in after-hours, weekend, and holiday animal coverage rotation

Training

• Train undergraduate assistants on lab protocol, including, fish rotation, and feeding schedule

Regulatory Compliance

• Accompanies external and internal regulatory authorities on site visits and inspections of facilities and programs for the Martin Fish Speciation Lab, as well as assists investigators in the development of AUPs that comply with campus, federal, and state regulations

Required Qualifications

• Ability to carry out a range of responsibilities with only general direction
• Requires thorough knowledge of biology and care commonly used in laboratory fish species and experimental methods
• Requires effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively and provide coaching and training to staff
• Must be computer literate; skills must support data entry tasks
• Ability to collaborate effectively with all levels of staff: technical, students, faculty, and administrators

Preferred Qualifications

• Some knowledge of working with non-traditional research fish in the laboratory

Salary & Benefits
Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $27.53 - $32.48 (steps 1-5).

• This is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position.
• This is a part-time (25%), 1-year (limited) position that is ineligible for UC benefits.
