Job description

Job Summary and Qualifications

Collects blood specimens using established laboratory techniques; utilizes keyboard and computer for entering patient demographics and test and report inquiry. Ensures accurate specimen processing to maintain specimen integrity. Performs registration procedures accurately and efficiently in order to ensure regulatory compliance. Performs various clerical duties. Obtains specimens from patients at off site facilities. Communicates effectively and works cooperatively with others to optimize job performance and foster working relationships.  


 Essential Position Functions : 


  • Maintains phlebotomy tray in a sanitary and properly supplied condition at all times. Test materials are properly prepared before each test; all necessary materials/supplies are available during the test.  


  • Performs venipunctures on Inpatients, Outpatients, Emergency room patients and nursing home patients. 


  • Correctly identifies patients as per lab policy, asking patient for two identifiers when drawing blood. Patient is asked to spell their first and last name and their DOB, and inpatient’s wrist band is checked to verify the patient ID. 


  • Performs venipuncture in an average time of 5 minutes with minimal trauma to neonatal, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients. 


  • Knows all solutions used in tubes, or knows where to locate information regarding specimen requirements and appropriate tubes. 


  • Draws blood following Standard Precautions and OSHA Regulations and properly disposes of needles immediately after use. 


  • Accurately labels tubes at the patient's side immediately after a procedure is completed with appropriate information. 


  • Performs dispatch of specimens at offsite locations for courier transport to the Hospital lab. 


  • Demonstrates the ability to learn and apply new methodologies. 


Position Qualifications: 


High School diploma preferred.  Medical terminology desirable. General knowledge of phlebotomy terminology and good computer skills. Ability to review and understand department and Hospital manuals and procedures in order to properly carry out job duties. Clerical perception, attention to detail and finger dexterity required to rapidly and accurately transcribe data from requisitions to the computer ordering system. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
