Job description

Position Purpose

This position is responsible for coordination of the on-boarding of new employees, assessment of employee competencies, training of technical skill set, and ensuring employees adhere to Patient Experience expectations as directed from Leadership. In addition, this position will provide evidence-based input to Lab Support Services Leadership in the ongoing revision and implementation of departmental policies and procedures, protocol development and implementation as well as provide orientation to new personnel. This position serves as a resource for physicians, nurses, and other hospital employees. This position provides input regarding new supplies for purchase, and assists Leadership staff in reviewing incidents and occurrence reports to maintain the department’s goals. This position is also responsible for coordinating the student rotation for all applicable participating Phlebotomy College programs.  

Nature and Scope

In conjunction with the management team this position is responsible for coordinating and facilitating departmental education and competency plans. Organizing, updating and implementing orientation program for new Clinical Lab Assistant and Clinical Lab Assistant Lead personnel and maintaining, revising, and updating departmental Policies and Procedures.

The incumbent is accountable for the assessment, planning, and implementation of drawing Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric patients and communicating with families. He/She must demonstrate the ability to work with patient’s physical, motor/sensory adaptation, cognitive and psycho social needs specific to the population being served, and meet standards of quality as required by the department.

In collaboration with the management team, this position has the authority to develop and schedule education and competency programs while incorporating Patient Experience standards defined by Leadership and the organization.

Minimum Qualifications

Description

Education:

Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing and speaking English. Appropriate education to obtain and maintain State of Nevada Laboratory Assistant licensure. Bachelor’s degree in a Healthcare or Education related field is preferred.

Experience:

Minimum of 5 year recent general laboratory experience preferred and one year as a Clinical Lab Assistant in an acute care setting required.  Previous teaching experience is preferred. 

License(s):

Requires current Laboratory Assistant licensure. Ability to obtain and maintain state of Nevada Laboratory Assistant Licensure Within 6 months of hire is required.

Valid State of Nevada or California driver's license and ability to pass Renown Health's Department of Motor Vehicle Report criteria.

Certification(s):

Ability to pass Board of Registry Examination for Phlebotomy Technician from the following agencies within 15 months of hire is required.

(a)  The American Medical Technologists (AMT)

(b)  The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)

(c)   The American Certification Agency for Healthcare Professionals (ACA)

(d)  The National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)

(e)  The National Healthcare Association (NHA)

(f)   The National Phlebotomy Association (NPA)

Failure to apply for the certification and pass within 15 months of hire will result in demotion to Clinical Laboratory Assistant(not required for 200287)

Computer / Typing:

Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, and be able to obtain within 90 days, the computers skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
