Job description

The Department of Neuroscience at UVA's School of Medicine is dedicated to gaining a better understanding of brain function in health and disease, with the ultimate goal to inform future treatment and improve quality of life. Our researchers use multi-disciplinary approaches ranging from cell biology and genetics to biophysics and immunology and their work is at the cutting edge of biomedical discovery. Examples of diseases actively researched include brain tumors, infection, hearing loss, multiple sclerosis, stroke, seizure disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, traumatic brain injury, Huntington Disease and Alzheimer's dementia. Importantly, many of our investigators are neuroimmunologists and glial biologists who take a particular interest in the interaction between neurons and immune or glial cells, respectively. Position Summary
The Lukens lab in the Department of Neuroscience and the Center of Brain Immunology and Glia (BIG) at the University of Virginia is seeking to hire a m otivate d and detail-oriented Lab Tech/Specialist varying levels to perform and assist with animal colony management, data analysis, and experiments. The Lukens lab is investigating the role of neuroinflammation in Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, and traumatic brain injury. Hiring level will b e depe ndent on experience.
Responsibilities
The incumbent will be responsible for managing the lab's animal colony, genotyping, contributing to data analysis, performing molecular studies, and helping to train Graduate Students.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent

  • Experience: At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.

Physical Demands
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. It also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
