Position Summary:

The job of High School Library Aide is done for the purpose of providing support to the educational process under the direction of a Library Media Specialist, with specific responsibilities for aiding in the teaching of library curriculum and the use of computer, online tools and multimedia resources; maintaining the library collections at school sites; identifying age appropriate resources for students and teachers utilizing library resources; selecting appropriate items in support of classroom instruction; and performing clerical functions related to collection, processing, circulation, maintenance, and inventory of library materials and/or textbooks.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists with supervision of students and activities for the purpose of maintaining a safe environment conductive for learning per board usage policies.
  • Assists teachers, students and administrators for the purpose of identifying resource materials for use in classroom and/or class assignments.
  • Maintains materials inventory for the purpose of providing an up-to-date reference and ensuring the availability of materials when required.
  • Orders supplies and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability as needed.
  • Participates in unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Performs circulation activities for the purpose of controlling the use, location and availability of items in the collection.
  • Prepares manual and electronic documents and reports for the purpose of providing documentation and information to others.
  • Processes new student library cards, notices of missing, damaged or overdue books, media and materials for the purpose of providing and/or maintaining access to library resources and securing reimbursement for losses.
  • Processes library books, periodicals, software and related media materials for the purpose of providing students and staff with required materials.
  • Provides a functional and structured learning environment in the library by utilizing classroom management and organizational approaches, instructs students various skills for the purpose of advancing the thinking and comprehending abilities of students.
  • Responds to inquiries of students, staff, parents for the purpose of providing information and/or direction as required.
  • Teaches all grade school students the skills to type, fundamental of computer and use a variety of online tools and multimedia resources in computer lab for the purpose of learning how to type, exploring website, and improve math, reading, and science skills.

Other Functions:

  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. This position is a split position and will require work at more than one site.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications : Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

Skills are required to perform multiple tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

Knowledge is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: library practices; computer and internet operations; student behavior; management strategies; age appropriate activities; and instructional strategies.

Ability is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; and developing effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community.

Responsibility:

Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized routines; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to effect the organization's services.

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 40% sitting, 30% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness and in a clean atmosphere.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

Equivalency: Any combination of education, training, and/or experience which demonstrates ability to perform the required duties. A typical qualifying background would include 60 hours college credit, or passing score on ParaPro Assessment, or Complete the 20 hour Substitute Certificate Course. Previous experience working in classrooms or a combination of experience and post high school training is desirable.

Background Check: Employment in this position is contingent upon consent to and successful completion of a pre-employment background check, which may include a criminal background check, reference checks, verification of work history, and verification of any required academic credentials, licenses, and/or certifications, with results acceptable to the Blue Springs School District. Background check information will be used in a confidential, non-discriminatory manner consistent with state and federal law.
