Summary Objective:
The purpose of this position is to collect, manage, analyze, and interpret law enforcement data to identify patterns, trends, and actionable insights. This position supports operational and strategic decision-making by developing reports, dashboards, and analytical products, and by maintaining data systems and applications.
This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and analytical approaches.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
  • Discusses data requirements, reporting needs, and system functionality with users; recommends changes to improve efficiency, accuracy, and usability of reports and systems.
  • Review's purpose and content of reports to improve format, functionality, and accessibility.
  • Collects, extracts, and integrates data from multiple sources including law enforcement systems (e.g., RMS, CAD), databases, and external sources.
  • Creates and maintains data structures, datasets, and data extraction processes for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develops, writes, and maintains SQL queries to extract, transform, and analyze large datasets.
  • Performs statistical and analytical analysis to identify patterns, trends, and anomalies in crime and operational data.
  • Prepares statistical reports and program evaluations related to department operations, grants, and initiatives.
  • Generates and distributes reports, dashboards, and system status summaries for management and operational use.
  • Designs and develops visualizations including charts, graphs, and dashboards to communicate analytical findings.
  • Develops and maintains Power Bi dashboards and automated reports.
  • Searches for computer records and databases to respond to information requests from management, internal personnel, and external stakeholders.
  • Supports, creates, or modifies computer applications, reporting tools, and data processes.
  • Coordinates with Metro Technology Services staff and vendors to resolve system issues and improve data systems.
  • Assists in evaluating program effectiveness, crime trends, and operational initiatives to support strategic planning and resource allocation.
  • Prepares written reports, briefings, and presentations to communicate findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Maintains confidentiality, integrity, and security of sensitive law enforcement data.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Requirements
  • MUST BE A CURRENT, REGULAR EMPLOYEE OF LMPD.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Data Analytics, Statistics, Criminal Justice, or related discipline.
  • One (1) year of experience in data analysis, database management, programming, or data systems operations.

EQUIVALENCY
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be substituted.

OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must demonstrate good moral character and conduct consistent with the responsibilities of the position. Individuals convicted of a felony, or those with any pending criminal charges are not eligible for employment.
  • Applicants may be disqualified for multiple misdemeanors, an otherwise unacceptable criminal record, or multiple traffic violations.
  • Must submit to a pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must submit to a pre-employment polygraph test.
  • Must submit to fingerprinting for criminal history check.
  • Applicants who have illegally bought or used marijuana, including medicinal cannabis, within six months of application will be disqualified.
  • Applicants who have illegally sold marijuana, including medicinal cannabis, within one year of application will be disqualified.
  • Applicants who have illegally bought, sold, or used any controlled substance or narcotic drug, other than marijuana, without a prescription within six years of application will be disqualified.
  • Must be willing to work a varied schedule.
  • Must be available for on-call duty as required.
  • Must obtain CJIS Certification and/or NCIC Certification within one (1) month of employment.
  • Must obtain and maintain required certifications as needed.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
  • Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
