Ropes & Gray is an equal opportunity employer.
The Senior Practice Development Specialist (SPDS) will serve as a trusted advisor to the Global Director of Practice Development, the Senior Practice Development Manager (PDM) and other practice development team members in support of the Practice Group Leaders (PGLs), Specialty Group Leaders (SGLs) and partners in the Private Capital Transactions group (PCTG).
The SPDS, in coordination with the PDM, will act as an advisor and liaison on behalf of PCTG with other practices, attorneys and business support departments at the firm.
The SPDS will work directly with the Global Director of Practice Development and/or the PDM (or otherwise take the lead) to support the implementation of the overall strategy including working with partners to drive pieces of the strategy. The SPDS will work with the team to drive operational efficiencies within the PCTG. In this role, the SPDS will report to the PDM and work closely with other departments (e.g., Business Development, Finance, Marketing, Knowledge Management, Attorney Development, etc.) to support elements of the strategic vision, business operations, financial profitability, resource management, and goals of the PCTG.
The ideal candidate will have experience working in a large law firm or other professional services environment; exceptional project management abilities; strong organizational and communication (both verbal and written) skills and attention to detail; innate bias to take initiative; can-do attitude; demonstrated ability to use technology, database, presentation, spreadsheet, document management and other software applications.
- Work alongside PDM and practice group leadership to support the development and implementation of PCTG’s strategic group plan and to drive the implementation of the plan. Manage select work streams and initiatives in support of the strategy and practice priorities.
- Serve as a point of contact for daily operations of the PCTG, including the preparation and design of (and in certain cases, managing) PG substantive meetings that maintain focus on PG priorities.
- Identify opportunities for improvement, innovation, and efficiency in business operations, matter management, infrastructure and methodologies. Make strategic recommendations and work with PDM to develop solutions and plans for corresponding actions.
- Partner with the Global Director of Practice Development, PDM, SGLs and PGLs with the onboarding and integration of lateral partners and counsel into PCTG, including preparation and execution of integration plans and tracking onboarding progress. Support office/regional expansion relating to new hires.
- Under the supervision of the PDM, collaborate with Finance colleagues to analyze practice group performance metrics and identify actionable themes that support the growth and goals of the practice. Support preparation and tracking of practice group budgets.
- Monitor trends and market developments and opportunities relevant to PCTG; share relevant developments with key stakeholders.
- Act as a mentor to junior team members (specialists, coordinators and analysts).
- An undergraduate degree with a minimum of five years of relevant experience in a law firm, professional services firm or other corporate environment.
- Goal-oriented with a positive, can-do attitude and a collaborative working style.
- Excellent oral communication and business writing skills, and attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish credibility with Ropes & Gray partners and bring to bear the right mix of confidence, tact and persistence in working with the firm’s lawyers and professional staff in a multi-office environment.
- Exceptional project management and organizational skills, including ability to develop project plans and set deadlines to meet business objectives, manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to anticipate, identify and solve problems, work independently, take initiative, and make decisions using sound judgment.
- Ability to compile, review, analyze and determine logical conclusions or recommendations based on data and information that is varied in context, content and format.
