Knowledge Graph Architect information

What is a knowledge graph architect?

Knowledge Graph Architects are professionals who design, develop, and maintain knowledge graphs—data structures that organize information into interconnected entities and relationships. They combine expertise in data modeling, semantic technologies, and ontologies to enable advanced data integration, search, and analytics within organizations. Their work helps businesses extract meaningful insights from complex datasets by structuring information in ways that are both machine-readable and semantically rich.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a knowledge graph architect?

To thrive as a Knowledge Graph Architect, you need expertise in data modeling, semantic technologies, graph databases, and a strong background in computer science or information systems. Familiarity with tools like RDF, SPARQL, OWL, Neo4j, and experience with data integration platforms or cloud-based data services is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder management skills are essential to translate complex data needs into scalable knowledge graph solutions. These competencies enable effective design, implementation, and maintenance of knowledge graphs, which are critical for deriving actionable insights from complex data landscapes.

What are some typical challenges knowledge graph architects face when integrating data from diverse sources?

Knowledge Graph Architects often encounter challenges related to data heterogeneity, including varying data formats, inconsistent naming conventions, and differing semantics across multiple systems. Successfully integrating these disparate data sources requires designing robust ontologies, mapping relationships, and resolving conflicts to ensure data consistency and usability. Collaboration with domain experts, data engineers, and business stakeholders is essential to align technical solutions with business needs, making strong communication skills and adaptability crucial in this role.

Our ideal candidate is an experienced Database Engineer who can develop scalable data architectures across relational, graph, and semantic database technologies while maintaining high standards for performance, security, availability, and data integrity.

You will work closely with ontology engineers, software developers, data architects, data scientists, analysts, and Government stakeholders to translate mission requirements into effective database and data integration solutions. This role will support Semantic Web technologies, knowledge graphs, and AI/ML-enabled analytics across structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data environments.

Essential Functions:

  • Design, implement, administer, and optimize relational, graph, and semantic database environments supporting mission requirements.
  • Develop logical and physical data models supporting ontologies, taxonomies, knowledge graphs, and enterprise metadata management.
  • Design scalable database architectures utilizing Semantic Web technologies, including RDF triple stores, graph databases, and SPARQL endpoints.
  • Develop and maintain ETL/ELT processes to integrate data from diverse enterprise sources into knowledge management platforms.
  • Collaborate with technical teams and Government stakeholders to translate mission requirements into database designs and data integration solutions.
  • Optimize database performance through query optimization, indexing, partitioning, replication, and capacity planning.
  • Implement database security, encryption, access controls, backup and recovery procedures, and auditing in accordance with Government cybersecurity requirements.
  • Develop automation, monitoring, and maintenance processes to support database availability, reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Support AI/ML initiatives by providing scalable infrastructure and efficient access to structured, semi-structured, and semantic data.
  • Maintain technical documentation, database standards, data dictionaries, configuration management artifacts, and operational procedures.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and knowledge transfer to Government personnel and project team members on database architecture and administration best practices.

  • Demonstrated experience designing, implementing, and administering enterprise database solutions for mission-critical applications
  • Experience with relational database technologies such as PostgreSQL, Oracle, or Microsoft SQL Server and graph databases such as Neo4j, Amazon Neptune, Stardog, GraphDB, or equivalent
  • Experience designing and optimizing databases supporting Semantic Web technologies, RDF data stores, or knowledge graph platforms
  • Experience developing ETL/ELT processes and integrating structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data from multiple enterprise sources
  • Knowledge of database performance tuning, indexing, backup and recovery, replication, security, and high-availability architectures

Nice to have:

  • Experience supporting enterprise ontology or knowledge graph initiatives within Government or Intelligence Community environments
  • Experience implementing RDF triple stores, SPARQL endpoints, and semantic data integration frameworks
  • Familiarity with AI/ML data pipelines and semantic data architectures supporting advanced analytics
  • Experience with cloud-based database platforms and containerized environments, including Kubernetes and OpenShift
  • Experience automating database deployment, configuration management, and monitoring using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools
  • Relevant database or data management certifications, such as CDMP, OCP, Azure Database Administrator Associate, AWS Database Specialty, or equivalent
