Job description

Why join the talent poolMission

Your main focus will be to own and drive the delivery of complex backend features, shaping the technical direction of the team and raising the engineering bar across KNIME's cloud platform.

Role Overview

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will own complex backend components (Java or Golang) end-to-end, from technical discovery through long-term maintenance, and drive technical design with high autonomy. You will collaborate with product managers, architects, and other engineering teams to ensure solutions meet both product and business requirements, making informed trade-offs between performance, scalability, and maintainability. You will also act as a technical anchor for the team: mentoring engineers, identifying technical debt and architectural risks, and shaping the team's technical direction and engineering practices.

Responsibilities
  • Drive technical design, frame and solve problems that span service and system boundaries
  • Design, implement, review, maintain, and test secure microservices powering the KNIME cloud platform
  • Build and improve lean and robust REST APIs
  • Identify technical debt, security issues, architectural risks, and lead mitigation efforts
  • Lead the debugging of complex cross-component production issues
  • Set high standards for code quality, design patterns, and engineering practices across the codebase
  • Partner with architects, other teams, and product management to ensure technical solutions meet product and business requirements
  • Provide mentoring and direction for other team members
  • Research, identify, and present patterns and technologies relevant to software architecture and product design
  • Actively contribute to cross-team engineering communities and shared technical standards
Requirements
  • Degree in computer science or a comparable field
  • 5+ years of experience designing and implementing large-scale applications
  • High proficiency in either Java or Golang, with intermediate-level experience in the other, focused on backend development
  • Microservice design, development, and deployment experience
  • Experience with at least one cloud platform (AWS or Azure), including load balancing, scaling, networking, and security
  • Familiarity with relational databases and data modeling for scale
  • Experience with Kubernetes and containerization
  • Familiarity with authentication/authorization technologies (e.g. OIDC, Keycloak)
  • Strong oral and written English communication skills
  • Experience with AI-driven software engineering is a plus
  • Familiarity with event-driven system design is a plus
  • Practical experience with Quarkus or Helm is a plus
LevelingWhat Success Looks Like
  • KNIME's cloud platform is powered by a robust, scalable, and secure confluence of systems and services that solve real-world user problems
  • By proactively surfacing and mitigating technical debt, security issues, and architectural risks, production incidents are consistently prevented
  • Less experienced engineers grow measurably in technical confidence and skill through mentoring and code reviews
  • The team works with a healthy, collaborative dynamic where trust enables a genuine sense of enjoyment and pride in building great software together
What we offer
  • High ownership and autonomy: be a driving force and technology advocate as we design and build our next generation of service offerings during a key scaling phase for the company
  • Real impact at scale: your work powers a platform that will enable thousands of users to solve complex problems that matter
  • Investment in your growth: learning is built into how the team works
  • Flexibility, health and wellbeing: hybrid working, flexible hours, subsidised sports or yoga courses, physiotherapy, and flu shots at select locations
